Raspberry Pi
So you want to build a dial-up ISP from scratch? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb50cWlbzRo
Incredible video about just what it takes, exactly, to create an authentic 90s dial-up modem Internet Service Provider in the modern day. Fully explains things like RAS, PPP, SLIP and so forth that you will likely have heard of at the time but not understood. The fact you don't have to create your own routing tables by hand to get online is testament to some incredible work done by individuals to make the Internet accessible to home users at just the right time when it really took off.

Ah, the #nostalgia of trying to resurrect a game for an OS that should be fossilized by now! 😂 Dig out your floppies and dial-up #modems, because someone's determined to make "retro" synonymous with "unnecessary pain." Who cares that it's 2026 and XP is about as relevant as a fax machine? 🤷♂️

Well, I got back to the Dreamcast dial-up project. I verified I had everything set up and did another test call from a handset to the number I configured and yep, I'm hearing modem noises.
I tried connecting from the Dreamcast and I got "NO CARRIER" multiple times, then after a few tries the text output box started speaking in tongues. I don't know enough about the USB modem I ordered to see what it's seeing, either. I'm stumped.

All of that is not a knock on Alpine Linux! I'm currently running a VM with Debian and Webmin to run my Samba share. After reading some Alpine Linux documentation, I really think I could just move that Samba share to a tiny Alpine Linux VM instead and use even less resources.
It's just that Alpine Linux is apparently the wrong tool for the job for my dial-up project.
-
Also hey, note for those playing at home:
Enabling IP masquerading may or may not be necessary, based on my loose understanding of dial-up. If it is needed, Debian 13 uses nftables. Changing stuff in nftables involves using the "nft" command that does nothing if you aren't root or add "sudo" beforehand. I was tripped up by this until I stumbled upon a post online saying "hey use sudo first" and it suddenly worked. -
Dial-up server is set up! Unfortunately, contractors are working on my kitchen floor, and the phone cable I had placed for testing runs just outside of the kitchen. I removed the cable from the conduit to be safe; even if it was a cheap cable, I'd rather have it out of their way.
Tomorrow they should be done, and at that point I'll be moving this and a few other cables back to the living room. At that point, I should be able to take my Dreamcast online!
-
On the homelab front: New HDDs for my NAS shipped crazy-quickly, but I was in bed when they showed up so I need to stop by a UPS store to pick them up tomorrow or the day after.
I've been eying disk shelves, but I can't justify the costs yet.
I have a USB modem coming for my server so I can bring my old Dreamcast back online, it's supposed to be here within the next week.
-
The downside is this old HP LSI Concorde modem I was going to use. I installed it in a spare PC and... there are no drivers auto-installed. Did some digging and apparently softmodem cards had the bare basic hardware to work and relied on their proprietary drivers. Each manufacturer did it differently so Linux driver support is spotty at best.
I did find this martian-modem driver package, but the installer doesn't work on modern kernels.
-
Okay, the phone line portion of the dial-up project works! The phone jacks in my apartment don't seme to be connected together, but I was able to make it work. Since it's only going from the basement to the living room, I used a 50ft phone cord I purchased awhile back and ran it through the conduit I've placed. A test call from the cordless handset rings the test phone I had hooked up downstairs!

My end goal - if it doesn't break things - is to put this Cisco SPA112 on a shelf on the network rack in my basement. One port will go to a PCIe modem that I plan to eventually put in my my Proxmox host, and the other port will go to the RJ11 jack on the wall. From there, I can plug my Dreamcast or a phone or anything into another wall jack and do dial-up stuff or maybe eventually play with SIP and do *something* with home automation and analog phones?
-
RE: https://mastodon.social/@mrgm/116317513731024706
It works!!!
And the PCIe modem's here, too! If it wasn't stupid-late at night then I'd put the modem in a spare computer and try to get this dial-up stuff working! If it doesn't work then I guess it's time for a different modem? The telephone system side is working great. I also need to talk to my ISP at some point and see if putting this on my apartment's phone lines will mess with the "not active but maybe still plugged in" phone service at my ONT. -
RE: https://mastodon.social/@mrgm/116281839820441670
I've got the Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) but not the PCIe modem. Part of me wants to work on making one port ring the other, but another part for me knows that it's the middle of the night and testing my settings will involve making a test analog phone ring in the middle of the night. I like my neighbors too much to do that to them!

I don't normally post about projects while they're still in the research & gathering materials phase, but I *think* I can create a dial-up setup on my home server with a PCIe modem providing the connection on the server. Dialtone will be provided by a Cisco SPA112 ATA thing, set up so that calling some arbitrary number dials from one port to the other.
The client dialing in will be my old Dreamcast, but if this works, any client should work..!

"Today's AI is tomorrow’s dial-up!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
There’s a phrase I like to use: “Today will involve the slowest rate of change for the rest of your life!”
That concept seems quaint in the era of fast-moving AI. In fact, we should rephrase it: “By the time you finish reading this sentence, the state-of-the-art has already moved on.”
Think back to 2024. We were impressed by a chatbot that could summarize a PDF. For those of us of a technical bent, we thought a 128k ‘context window’ was a “breakthrough.” In retrospect, that was the screeching, static-filled noise of the 56k modem era. We were in the AOL-era of AI!
Today? Welcome to the broadband era of intelligence.
In just the last 24 months, the landscape hasn’t just shifted. It’s undergone a seismic shift. The ground we knew below our feet has been pulverized and rebuilt. Think about just a few of the AI trends as we go into this new era:
The Memory Explosion: We’ve graduated from "summarizing a document" to "uploading the entire library." Leading models like Gemini now process millions of tokens at once, compared to the 128k context windows we were celebrating as breakthroughs just 18 months ago. We aren't just prompting; we’re giving AI an entire War & Peace document set to churn through.
The Price Collapse: Intelligence is now a commodity utility. The cost to run GPT-4-class reasoning has plummeted by 98%. What cost $60 is now essentially "too cheap to meter" at less than $0.75.
From "Chatting" to "Doing": 2024 was about talking to a screen. 2026 is about Agentic AI. We're moving past chatbots to autonomous agents that negotiate, navigate CRMs, and execute project workflows without being babysat.
The last few weeks have had me working with Claude Cowork and Claude Copilot, and my entire concept of AI has changed. I don’t just ask it questions — I now instruct it to go off and do the work on my behalf. That’s a subtle but important change, and once you wrap your head around what that change brings, your head explodes.
And I haven't even yet jumped into the world of Claw! It's on the list!
It is evident that not only is the power and capability of AI accelerating, but we are rapidly building a new operating system around it. If you are still "playing around" with prompts, you’re still waiting for the handshake signal on a dial-up connection. You're stuck with a modem connection when the rest of the world has installed fiber.
The bandwidth of possibility has expanded. The question isn't whether the tech is ready. The question is: Are you ready for the speed of the "Broadband" era, or are you still waiting for the page to load?
----
Futurist Jim Carroll started his online experience with a 300-baud modem in 1982. Think about that.

Actually - if the current #Fascist #Authoritarian Assaults on speech and the internet continue unabated - we may need to revert to #dialup point-to-point connections with the old #modems that made that sound.
Although I dont think an analog modem would work over a cell network. Hmmm... now I made myself curious...

#Retro #POTS #dialup #rockwell
