First up in our session on "Crossing Borders, Building Meaning: Exploring the Dynamics of Knowledge Transmission and Trust in Digital Humanities" at #DH2024: Mengyuan Zhou speaking about "Building Bridges or Walls? Topic Modeling for Analyzing Trust in Indirect Literary Translation".
The author used zero-shot BERTopic Modeling with pre-defined topic labels.
-
Last but not least in our session: Wenyi Shang (presenting), Yuqi Chen, Ryan Dubnicek, Ryan Cordell and Stephen J Downie: "Interplays Between #Materiality and Content in #Book History: Evidence from 16thβ19th Century #Chinese and #English Books", at #DH2024. #BookHistory
They used #HathiTrust Extracted Features, which is very cool of course. Book size and print size interact in interesting, and different, ways in Chinese and English.

Interesting! Dominika Weronska on "A Stylometric Glance at Basque Novels" at #DH2024. #stylometry
The author did stylometric analyses on 57 Basque novels, a first!

Next, at what looks like a #CLS session at #DH2024, Henny Sluyter-GΓ€thje from #Darmstadt (and a member of the @jcls editorial team) on "Operationalizing Narrative Perspective for Annotation".
Pretty elaborate #annotation scheme, supported by annotation #guidelines and used within the #CATMA annotation tool.
-
Now up at #DH2024, Maciej Eder, developer of #stylo and co-organizer of #DH2016 in #Krakow, on various distance measures for #Stylometry: "Manhattan, Euclidean and their Siblings. Exploring Exotic Measures of Text Similarities...".
Key idea: Manhattan distance is L1-norm based, Euclidean is L2. But we can vary this parameter for a wide range of values, from 0.1 to 10. Then evaluate accuracy for authorship attribution.
Result: For longer vectors, it pays off to use a value of less than 1!

Hearing so many great talks at #DH2024, not only (by far!) but also in the area of Digital Stylistics and Computational Literary Studies!
So I'd like to suggest that presenters could think about submitting full-paper versions of their talks to the Journal of Computational Literary Studies!
It's Diamond #openaccess (no APC), you can submit any time (in the journal-only track) and we value a constructive peer-review process!

The approach they used for #classifying the poems' function in the narrative were interesting, using #LLMs. Performance is pretty bad so far. Keli took up the call for #openness about #failure from a session this morning and showed that the different models are bad in different ways, which allowed the team (and us) to learn something about the models. I think that's great and valuable!
-
Now up, @cnDuKeli of @tcdh and Rongqian Ma speaking at #DH2024 about #intertextuality of embedded #poetry in #Ming and #Qing #vernacular writing. Based on 360 embedded poems from 18 novels.

Awesome!! Just in time for #DH2024, our edited volume on "Digital Stylistics in Romance Studies and Beyond" has come out with Heidelberg University Publishing!
Edited by @josecalvo, @robert, @u_henny, Daniel SchlΓΆr and myself, and documenting papers from our #CLiGS conference.
It's #openaccess, of course! Find details and download here: https://heiup.uni-heidelberg.de/catalog/book/1157

@robertcasties please think about introducing the same special track or "mini-conference" (inside the conference!) to the @DHd confs from #DHd2025 on. At least a panel or a discussion-focussed workshop like the one on LLM/KI last year should be easy enough to get through the review process.
And best wishes to you and all at #DH2024, sorry to miss the fun on-site, for reasons of current work load, scarcity of travel budget and more so, environmental considerations.

Really fun to see PhD candidate Trent Wintermeier present on AVAnnotate -- a project that was first developed for UT Austin prof Tanya Clement by Brumfield Labs. We're working on version 2.0 with Tanya and the Brumfields. I've been working on this all year from the initial designs & user stories, and it's been awesome to see the pieces start to come together. #DH2024 #DHTech

A bit more on the creation of the Maria Edgeworth Letters Project -- the letters were transcribed by volunteers via Zooniverse: https://buff.ly/3SD0jBU
There are a lot of other projects and tasks for volunteers who want to help researchers code data (everything from sunspots to baby sounds!) https://buff.ly/2TNtUc2

At #DHTech this morning, and in the first presentation, Bryan Tarpley from Texas A&M mentioned the New Variorum Shakespeare project, and I very happily went down A Midsummer Night's Dream rabbit hole -- this is really cool! https://buff.ly/4d9YZyO #DH2024
