  1. I do note that the #DfE have not clarified their position on #BYOD provision for 6th form / "reasonable adjustments" mobile phones, which I raised with them last year.

Both the new and previous guidance *appear* to prohibit #schools from providing BYOD networks in those cases, which I don't think is the intent, but the DfE gave a rather wordy non-reply when I questioned it. :(

  2. Unhelpfully, the #DfE doesn't publish a "substantive changes" summary of these kinds of update, so I will need to do a side-by-side comparison with the old guidance from archive.org.

  3. #BBC is reporting that "new #guidance" says that #children must not use mobile phones in #schools in England. But this has been the case for the past 2 years!

The #DfE published new guidance a couple of weeks ago and the article goes on to say that the previous guidance "did not deliver the clarity or consistency that schools need". From a quick scan of the updated guidance it doesn't look hugely different from the previous guidance, so why this is presented as new?

  4. We continue our work on papers from our multi-arm trials in the "Education for #Wellbeing" programme.

#PeerReview comments were a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues over the revisions!

  5. Currently wading through 187 pages of Keeping Children Safe in Education. The #DfE saw fit to publish the latest edition moments before school's broke up for the summer, with the expectation that they would implement the new recommendations from September, which seems somewhat mean.

  6. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education - this is the The Department for Education’s (DfE) position on the use of generative AI in the education sector, updated in January 2025.

  9. Esther McVey the Minister for Common Sense, has hit opposition to her new rule to ban rainbow lanyards in the civil service. 🏳️‍🌈 independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli

The DfE has declared it will not follow the new guidance as it was not consulted, and their civil servents are now flooding the system with requests for the colourful lanyards.

  10. Just seen a #DfE post on the Birdsite with someone claiming 'it's clear there's a stigma around #apprenticeships' (and goes on to explain why they're actually a good thing)

I'm left wondering, 'if that is actually the case, how come there are already so many more people who want to train through an #apprenticeship than there are vacancies for #apprentices?'

  11. Is it just me or is this a major scandal and waste of money the DfE seems remarkably relaxed about?
The Harlow school alone is £26 million to demolish and replace, one of five around the country. And that before you start looking at other departments. Yet there appears to be no word of pursuing the directors for what feels a bit like fraud.

  12. #UKRI have caved. Most alarming of all in the response is UKRI's review of advisory body appointments. #DfE already monitor social media of teachers critical of govt policy, & govt has blocked govt-critical scientists from speaking in their expert capacities at govt events ukri.org/news/response-to-the-

  13. “Is this a good use of the DfE’s limited time and resources? No. There are huge challenges facing schools that desperately need addressing.”

    No it bloody isn't, obviously.

  14. "... the DfE [earlier] tried to cancel a conference because two of its speakers, early-years experts Ruth Swailes & Aaron Bradbury, had previously been critical of govt policy. Now it has emerged that the department made similar threats in order to stop another expert...

"Dr Mine Conkbayir, an award-winning early-childhood author and consultant... the DfE had threatened to withdraw funding for the conference if she spoke."

  15. Portable flexi-jobs apprenticeship pilot flops.

Providers hit less than 1% of their target with just 2 months to go.

Flexi-Job, 'Portable' apprenticeships, T=Levels - So much investment, time and effort for providers and colleges to set these schemes up, market them to employers and learners, and it all seems to be for very little return.

If the government insists on putting these programmes together, their approach needs to change. Proper, localised, data-driven pilots with clear success criteria. A launch strategy with DfE marketing baked in to raise awareness.

    And funding. Fund them properly.

    Rant ends....
