  1. “It is a high ideal that Jesus sets for the life. And he takes us into close, confidential friendship about it all. He tells us what he expects, and how it may be. When we are his friends, and he tells what that means, he makes clear his plan that our life and prayers are to count in the changing of things that need changing, and in the bringing to pass of things that ought to happen.”

  5. Elihu Thayer, founder of New Hampshire Missionary Society, writes on abominations. One is planning wicked devices to over-reach and take advantage of others in the market place. These are idle, and strip others of their earnings.

Isn’t much of this today simply seen as being a good businessperson? Where “overreaching” and “taking advantage” are not sins but fiduciary responsibilities?

How can you engage in helping others?

  6. “But Peter continued knocking, and when he opened, they saw him and were amazed” Acts 12:16.

Why didn’t He rescue James? As the chapter opens, we read that Herod kills James with the sword, violent hands are laid on some in the church, and then he seizes Peter with plans to kill him too after the Passover.

What was going on in the minds of these early Christians when they saw their friends so easily persecuted (and this was after Saul had earlier ravaged the church) and one from Jesus’ inner circle so quickly killed? Was God really with them? Was the church to be destroyed by the world’s relentless hate?

The church was in earnest prayer to God for Peter while he languished in prison. But did they believe in prayer? When an angel miraculously had Peter walk out of the prison to where the church was praying, they don’t believe at first that it is him, and when they finally see him in the doorway, they were amazed.

Amazed? God can do all things, for sure, and their shaken faith was renewed. But why not rescue James the same way? Because it did not suit the sovereign Lord’s purpose! The same Jesus in control of Peter’s situation was in James’ … and in ours too.

  7. By David Binkley (sent by email)

If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:6-7 ESV)

Almighty God, our merciful and kind Heavenly Father ~ thank you O LORD, for opening the doors of Heaven to all who will hear, believe and obey  the truth about Jesus Christ, who suffered, bled and died on the cross in order to bring forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. Soften the resistance to the Gospel among people in many nations who refuse to hear the truth. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

  8. A guidebook for GOD’S BOOK

A Guide to Reading the Bible in One Year & A common man’s commentary by Harold David Conley

    Day 190 - Proverbs Chapters 1-4 - Poetry

Today we begin Proverbs. A "Proverb" is a simple and concrete
saying that expresses a truth based on common sense or the
practical experience of humanity. Solomon was the wisest man in
all the Bible with the exception of Jesus. His wisdom and
experience allowed him to observe truths that most of us would
gloss over. The Holy Spirit inspired him to write these simple
truths in the form of these proverbs.

The first nine chapters addresses "My Son". Solomon gives basic,
common sense instruction to serve as a guide for his
"son". Chapters 10 through 29 is a collection of Solomon's
proverbs. They do not seem to be in any particular order. Most
verses are independent of the others. Chapter 30 is from Agur
and Chapter 31 is from Lemuel. In today's reading, Solomon pleas
for his readers to listen to their fathers. He points out that wisdom
is the "principal thing". At the core of wisdom is this truth, "Trust
in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own
    understanding."

Today, we would do well to heed God's wisdom.

In the Shadow ... don't miss Jesus! Man's wisdom is nothing
like God's wisdom. It was the wisdom of God that moved Him
to give His only Son, Jesus, for sinners like us. How many of us
would do that, much less call it "wise"? Christians trust His
    wisdom. Are you a Christian?
