Network troubleshooting is finding where the conversation broke 🧭🌐
Don’t just say “the network is down.”
Follow the message:DNS → IP → Route → Port → Firewall → NAT → TLS → Service
The final Networking for Humans post brings the whole series together.

Ansible is easy to install. A sane, reproducible development environment takes more thought.
My downstream-first setup uses RHEL 10.2, Podman, VS Code Dev Containers, and Red Hat-packaged Ansible Development Tools, while keeping the boundaries between upstream projects, downstream products, development containers, and production Execution Environments explicit.

We know Talos Linux is secure.
But don't take our word for it. Go run the benchmarks. https://oneuptime.com/blog/post/2026-03-03-run-cis-benchmarks-against-talos-linux/view

What reason would there be to seperate etcd out of the Kubernetes manifests of the control plane nodes but keep it as a native service installed on the same machines running the control plane?
There's nothing to gain in terms of high availability there.
You still have X amount of control plane nodes that also run etcd as cluster nodes.
I'm trying to figure out what my predecessor thought while building this Kubernetes environment.
The two etcd topologies mentioned in official K8S docs are:
- integrated etcd (etcd as a Kubernetes Manifest, started as containers together with coredns, kube-apiserver and so on)
- seperated etcd nodes (X amount of machines that host etcd as a native service on the OS and the control plane is configured to use them.

Welches Thema könnte hier im Fediverse völlig abwegig, untypisch, weit hergeholt und exotisch sein?
Richtig: Linux 🐧
-- 2.5 Admins (#sysadmin)
-- Hybrid Cloud Show (#devop #cloudnative #kubernetes #container)
-- Linux Dev Time (#dev)

Imagine: a remote server mounted via sshfs, #claudecode knows your ~/.ssh/config - you let claude know where everything is with some very specific prompts (in https://CLAUDE.md) 🤖🚀
I hear all #devops crying 😅 but: every command needs your approval. btw. No need for any 3rd-party #SSH MCPs !
result: you have a new #devop in your team, have fun ‼️😱🚀
Amazing times we live in....😎

Some statistics from a smaller Germany based Mastodon instance (burningboard.net)
We currently have 109 active users (logged in during the last 30 days).
The PostgreSQL Database size is 16.6GB
The media-data (S3) size is 201 GB with 775544 files.
The monthly traffic is around 900GB, 82% of that is IPv6 and just 18% is legacy IPv4.
Hardware (VM Sizing):
- 8 Altara Neoverse-N1 ARM64 CPU cores
- 16 GB DDR4 Ram
- 100 GB NVMe SSDSoftware-Stack:
- Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) aarch64
- Mastodon v4.3.7
- PostgreSQL 17.4
- Ruby 3.4.2
- Monitoring through Grafana/Loki and Uptime KumaThe low-power ARM system can handle the Mastodon instance without issues and even has some headroom left for future growth 🙂

In December I created some new repos to refine various snippets I had lying around into some new modules. Each is pretty useful for my day to day work, but in combinations they can be pretty powerful.
My #powershell #DevOp toolkit:
- https://github.com/cdhunt/Import-ConfigData Read YAML, JSON, TOML, PSD1
- https://github.com/cdhunt/Format-Document document templating in PS
- https://github.com/cdhunt/httpunitPS Unit test network changes
- https://github.com/cdhunt/Build-Docs Auto-gen module documentation
- https://github.com/cdhunt/potel Otel tracing for PS -

Using a combination of pyproject.toml, metadata library and #invoke the #edwh library allows for combining several #tasks.py collections. With #pip installable plugins, local tasks and run-everywhere functions it combines the best of code reuse, maintainability and project specific functionality. Still in beta, we'll be moving a lot of our internal project #devop code into an mit licensed open source repo.
The 1st functional plugin lives at https://github.com/educationwarehouse/edwh-multipass-plugin #python -

I'm a software engineer currently working in the #DevOp space.
Being #ThirdCultureIndivdual means I spent my early childhood in Hong Kong, then high school/college years in the UK. Have been living and working in the US since 2001 and now have 2 #ThirdCultureKid myself.
I try to maintain fitness with road #cycling and #mtb. Love #NonFiction and #scifi TV/movies and hate most (if not all) #fiction.
Care deeply about #climatechange and #environment.

Os compis de iCarto están buscando alguén para un posto de sistemas. Se controlas de sistemas GNU/Linux e che apetece traballar nunha empresa con filosofía e entorno inmellorable, anímate, e preséntate para este posto!
