Audio Interview: Writing and Editing Books for Young Readers with Howard Lovy and Amelia Ross
On the Self-Publishing with ALLi podcast, host Howard Lovy talks to Amelia Ross, a developmental editor and children’s librarian who specializes in KidLit, about what authors need to know when writing for young readers. Amelia explains the differences between board books, picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle grade, and YA, and why age categories matter. She also discusses authentic voice, age-appropriate content, the role of illustrations, and why children’s books work best when lessons emerge naturally through story and character.

@pc_bain @edibuddies @stetwalk Hello! I edit political and classical philosophy texts -- books, papers, and dissertations. I edit in American English, and I have experience working with people for whom English is not a primary language. I am familiar with common style guides. I have an MS in Ethics, so I offer a philosophical sounding-board as well as standard editing and formatting services. That's probably #DevelopmentalEditing?
Now, off to check out these amazing hashtags.

Since I just wrote this handy little summary for another purpose, I thought I'd share it here. It's about revising the dissertation for publication
* The dissertation is proving one's chops as a scholar. It is about the author. It has a topic. It has an audience of 1-3 people, and its job is to get you the PhD.
* The book is different in every way. It's about the reader, and the subject. It has a thesis and an argument. It has an audience scoped by the author (undergraduate students, advanced scholars, etc.)
* The book proposal is another document altogether: Its audience is the marketing department at the Press. The proposal also needs to provide evidence that the book will be done in a timely manner and on time (as defined by the author). That means a full manuscript or 2-3 chapters and an outline/chapter breakdown that evidences that this is not the dissertation, but a saleable scholarly book.
