I loved the info bus, the “Digital Angel”, in particular. I'm sure there are so many activities he did to help seniors in Germany be more digital literate and have more access to online tools than I know about. His work had meaningful impact for so many. I am so honored to have known Herbert. I just learned that he passed away earlier this month. Thank you for your service, your time, your energy & care, Herbert.

The Matriach is such a good host. She lets you choose the next vinyl to be played and obviously tells good stories to all her guests. I wish I spoke decent enough German to partake in the better ones.

Probably the most interesting of the four on tap... The Postdammer Stange. I hopped Lager with Wheat. It smells and tastes of a Raw Beer, but I haven't confirmed that with the maestro.

Malt sweetness. Nice wheat flavour.

My wife's first comment, "smells like our apartment when you brew".

Nice vibe here. To me, it's the Berlin version of my local whacky dive -- Shacklands.

I stopped posting in Amsterdam. I can summarize it by saying I drank a variety of local Amsterdam/Dutch and Imported Belgian beer -- which is quite popular. The most surprising beer was Amstel. Very crisp malt profile and I love the Dutch small glass serving.

Maybeeeee my last Kölsch in Cologne. Had a good meal here as well. This is perhaps the first Kölsch that stood out. Reminds me a bit of Hacker-Pschorr filtered Helles -- which is good, in my opinion.

I've also been trying to slow my intake. We are focusing more on coffee & slow walking while here in Cologne. It's a nice change of pace 😊 .

What I like best about Kölsch drinking is that you can can have a few glasses and not exceed much more than two half glasses elsewhere. I guess the inverse is that you can also pound 2 liters faster as there is less strain on your arm than a Maß Krug.

Not long after arriving in Cologne, we went to this Kölsch haus near our hotel. There really isn't much to say about Kolsch. It's clean, crisp, delicious, and I like the culture around how it's served. That being said, I'm struggling to taste a discernable difference between the 4 I've had so far.

Last beer of Kloster was the Rauchbier.

**Controversial Take**

The Kloster Bräu is the best Rauchbier I've ever had. It's perfectly balanced between Spezial and Schlenkerla. Might be controversial as I don't think they do their own malting (probably from Weyermann locally, who I wished I could've visited). Regardless, it's the perfect Smoke Malt level for my palate.

We walked down from the fortress and went to Wilde-Rose Bier Garten. What a lovely place. Perhaps my favourite in all of Bavaria.

Started with the Keller belier. 1 pic for 3 beers because opaque vessel.

My wife went back to the hotel for a nap and I had the Keesman Herran Pils. Great beer. Then some Germans joined my table. I had a great conversation about beer/life and we shared another Keller Bier.

Final Bier was the Hofbräu (Bamberg) Lager Hell. Crisp and delicious. Sadly, once you go Keller, nothing is quite as stellar.

Still perfect for the hot day & a hike quencher (small hike compared to Washington state we did last month).

For the first beers of the day, we hiked up to Altenberg. My wife had the Radler. I had the Mahr's Kellerbier. I can't say I've ever had a bad Kellerbier in Franconia. This one was great.

Second round. I had the Dunkles and the wife had the unfiltered lager. Wow, this Dunkel blew me away. By far the best I've ever had anywhere -- although, I haven't tried Augustiner's yet.

Mad temptation to take this mug with me 🥹 but I was a very good boy and only took photos.

Here are the first beers at GieSinger. I had the Märzen (right) and my wife stuck with the Helles. The Märzen was great, but not at all like what I had been accustomed to in Canada. I suppose there is an interpretation of Munich malt grist etc -- it's also important to note that the only imported "Märzen" I've ever had is Schlenkerla 😏

The Oktoberfest Museum only serves Augustiner. As Augustiner is the only remaining locally owned brewery. Can't complain because it really is a treat .

After a city tour yesterday, we stopped at a restaurant in the new town hall. I was curious to try Löwenbräu Helles as it's contract brewed in Canada.

Wasn't bad at all. Crisp. Very much needed as we were sweating bullets.
