Hint: if your software, starting with the same initial state and same inputs, produces different output between runs, it's not useful software. It's a PRNG in disguise, and you should be wary of anyone who *likes* it that way.

Beyond The 100-Year Flood - Probabilistic Flood Hazard Assessment For King And Pierce Counties Under Future Climate Scenarios

[part of my old stomping ground as an engineering geologist]
H/T @Kees Nederhoff
“Flood maps are usually built from a single design storm. For King and Pierce Counties in the Pacific Northwest (USA), [the authors] tried the opposite - simulate 82 years of actual coastal and river conditions (plus 18 synthetic years) with SFINCS and let the statistics fall out cell by cell. That took about 5,400 yearly simulations and 194,000 CPU hours on USGS's Hovenweep HPC. Worth it!
The design-event shortcut turns out to hide a real hazard. A deterministic 10-year event underestimated flood depths by up to half a meter compared to the continuous runs.
The bigger surprise [to the authors] was how one-sided the climate signal is. One metre of sea level rise takes King County's expected annual flooded area from 161 --> 787 hectares, almost a factor of five. Changes in storminess over the same horizon barely register. And somewhere between 100 and 150 cm of SLR, land that never floods today starts flooding fast. If you plan adaptation in Puget Sound, that threshold matters more than any single return-period map.
[They] also propose Expected Annual Flooded Area (EAFA) as a probability-weighted alternative to the binary "inside or outside the 100-year zone" label…”

@sereeena @pseudonym by the by, I had to try and define the word “probabilistic” for the first time yesterday — someone had, understandably, thought it was a joke word — and luckily I didn’t have to define “probability”.
But without that, I thought maybe #deterministic and #probabilistic are antonyms, opposites. Are they?

@sereeena @pseudonym same but if I’m honest, it’s my love for the deterministic era of computer software, in the 8-bit and 16-bit era when multitasking and machine “state” weren’t enforced by monolithic, undocumented registries and UUIDs
Ah that’s probably why I hated MS-DOS 5 adding serial numbers to floppy disks

@thelonelyghost A certain major cloud vendor's #Kubernetes implementation, and what happens when one must deal with both the "old" and "new" authn/authz schemes simultaneously in a cluster. It prefers new, but for best results, configure both for identical results, or at least as close as practical.
It wasn't our own smoking #footguns at the bottom of the #rabbithole, but at least there was a #deterministic answer that didn't require #vendor contact.

Ah, the new "battletested" #code #review tool from #Alibaba, because we all know adding more #AI #buzzwords like "LLM Agent" and "precise linelevel comments" is exactly what was missing from our lives. 🤖💥 Clearly, solving NPE and XSS issues with mystical "deterministic pipelines" is what the #tech world has been waiting for—since common sense didn't quite cut it. 🙄🔧

“Kelley describes why he created Zig, when other options including C, C++, Rust, and Go already exist. He said he set out to develop a digital #audio workstation. He tried Go, but found interoperability with C libraries difficult, and said the garbage collector caused audio delays. He tried C++, or coding C-style using a C++ compiler, but found that small mistakes led to memory corruption bugs that took weeks to fix. He tried Rust but "really struggled to write code that would satisfy Rust's rules," and spent a month trying to make font rendering work”
…
“The #Zig project is known for its #NoAI policy, set out in the code of conduct… Another negative for #AITooling is that it is #NonDeterministic and therefore its output always needs review, even for something as simple as refactoring the name of a function. Kelley prefers #deterministic tools in which he can have full confidence.“

The case of “vegetative electron microscopy” illustrated here shows what is badly needed in current #LLM research and has implications far beyond. We need tools that help us curate huge corpora. We need to be able to trace #hallucinations back to the training data and understand what are the specific (to a surprise, often #deterministic) reasons in the model input that cause that particular output.
If anyone is interested in collaborating on this, I'm in, have done some small-scale experiments and have already submitted a grant proposal.

Knowledge sharing, documentation, and process are the key to efficiency and work-life-balance. Not a plinko machine.

It looks like a situation where careful deterministic programming by someone with some understanding of both sides of the transaction should work.
Two matching modules might work even better.
They might even help people who find that difficult a little.Throwing books about other things into a bucket and picking out scraps does not seem a superior approach.

I've gotten in this habit of building all software to be #deterministic. And I mean ALL software. 😅
Functional languages make this easier. But they still don't capture state of systems you rely on. Like time or random number generators. 🫠 The things that truly break apart. 🙃
Abstracting non deterministic properties to calls you inject can make a world of difference. It helps then being able to evaluate why you get an error for api outside of your control. And yes time is an api. 😏

At the fundamental (#quantum) level, Nature is #probabilistic. Much of #computing is about modelling natural phenomena and it relies on semiconductor physics, which is inherently quantum mechanical. Yet, much of present day computing hobbles on #deterministic algorithms.🤷♂️
-
A new argument suggests that quantum mechanics may be more deterministic than previously thought, reigniting the debate on the relationship between physics and free will. The discussion centres around whether the indeterminacy at the quantum level leaves room for free will or if the universe is fundamentally deterministic.
