#Canva has just made @affinity one single app.
Well, many issues are to assess:
— Free-for-life: for how long?
— EPUB export: generating files that conform to the EPUB 3 specifications?
— IDML export: why still not possible? The integration with #Adobe workflows (mainly #InDesign) doesn't work!
— Styles (paragraph, character, table, cell, block, etc.): bullet proof?
— Does it work on Wine (GNU/Linux)?Looking for any benchmark.

CW: State of Desk Top Publishing (DTP) for people who aren’t publishing professionals
At the moment, your best option for doing prosumer or lower DTP … is a time machine. Microsoft Publisher — which was pretty bad — is going end of life. Affinity’s products, including Designer, cannot currently be purchased and it’s unclear whether version 3 will be a perpetual license. (Assuming what replaces version 2 will be something reasonably describable as version 3. Strange rumors abound.)
If you’re fairly good at HTML / CSS, don’t mind being unable to realistically collaborate with others, and have $500 (before tax), Prince XML might be for you. But at that point, I suspect you’re a pro who has outsized reasons for hating Quark or Adobe InDesign.
Scribus is one of those things where you only recommend it if you’ve either a) never used Scribus, or b) never used so much as a Word Processor newer than Word Perfect 5.1. (I have produced several things with Scribus. The most recent was less than a year ago. It’s still cringe-inducingly painful.)
So that’s fun.

The reason most #Software these days is shit, is because it's made by people who've only ever used software to do tasks. It's at the end of the human centipede of generational re-dubbing.
If you've never driven a bromide #Camera, and done hot wax layout, you can't make a good #DesktopPublishing app. The people who made those original apps were digitising the *bad* parts of the process for improvement, but leaving the good parts, the parts of the job that were enjoyable, as process-#Skeuomorphic

3 months of learning traditional typesetting and layout for our high school newspaper, we got this on the only Mac SE our entire school (or anyone in the school) had. The year was 1988. The version was 3.0. We didn't use QuarkXpress. We used this. I gravitated towards it, instantly.
