When I moved to Design Engineering, designer friends often asked me what does it actually mean to be a Design Engineer—and I don’t think I’ve seen a better and more concise way of explaining it than Vercel’s Design Engineering Principles:

That was one way of saying “no” out of many during ten months of job hunting. I wrote about all of them – the silence, the cruelty, the structural rejections, and the AI moment I should have seen coming. Also: friend’s question that ended the search in one sentence.

Design and Engineering as one
This long read by Matthias is too good to get lost in my Mastodon favorites:
When design decisions are made in tools that have no concept of state, of time, of viewport, of the real unpredictability of content, you stop designing for the Web. You design a fiction of the Web. And then you hand that fiction to engineers, who absorb in the process all the compromises and assumptions that were hidden inside the original fiction matthiasott.com
As a person who's interest and professional education started in Graphic Design and then moved to working in and for The Web, this article rings so many bells and describes exactly why I always felt that I could give way more to the projects than the role that I often was asigned to ('needs only to be developed') in that waterfallish project flow.

🤦♂️ Oh no, not another tech apocalypse! Claude Code's Opus 4.5 is here to turn everyone into a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. Get ready for a thrilling saga of engineers pretending to be designers, and designers pretending to be engineers, while PMs are just...pretending. 🎭💻

Fridays are for button updates, too. They seem simple, but get them wrong and you'll lock out millions of users. We found 12 accessibility failures in our current button component, including two that violate WCAG Level A standards. (1/6)

Come work with me to define the future of product design education in Aotearoa!
We’re looking for an early career or mid career researcher with a strong background in teaching and design practice and experience delivering apps with modern web platform or game engine technology. We’d also love to hear from researchers with deep expertise in type design and font engineering; information architecture and data visualisation; or similar niches adjacent to product design who might thrive in our unique interdisciplinary context.

Excited to launch the Actor Whitepaper site: https://whitepaper.actor – introducing Actors, a serverless programming model bringing UNIX philosophy to cloud computing.
Created at @apify, I crafted every aspect:
• Complete UI/UX design
• 3D illustrations & animations
• Full development in Astro
• Custom componentsThis demonstrates my design engineer approach: designing interfaces and bringing them to life through code.

As I mentioned in previous toots, I updated my website to a new, lighter theme. Then I added the ability to switch themes and font stacks, so users can choose what is their preferred way to experience my site. Today I wrote a blog post about the process and techniques I used. #webcomponents #css #webfonts #indieweb #accessibility #webdesign #designengineering

Came across this post by Vercel on #DesignEngineering and I think it perfectly sums up how I see myself and what I enjoy doing—“frontend engineer” just doesn’t cut it as a label anymore!

Would you hire an architect who doesn't understand the difference between concrete and wood?
> „Design is not art.“ — Don Norman.
I've recently heard a lot about #designEngineering. About designers who code or software engineers who design. I think to be a good UX Designer you must also be a developer. You don't have to be a world class software engineer, but you do have to understand the material used to build your creations: code.

Explosion testing!
Back in 2001 I work on a contract with gas fire manufacturer Robinson Willey in Liverpool.
This short video shows the explosion testing carried out on a newly designed glass fronted built-in gas fire.
I designed the coal bed and burner for this fire.
A very happy 10 months working there, great people although the CAD system (Radan RadDraft) was awful!
(People outside of the North of England may struggle to understand the conversation in the background)
