Welcome to ThrasherQuest 2025!
Desert Thrasher populations are declining, and you can help us learn more about LeConte's & Bendire's Thrashers on their #Nevada stronghold on Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.
Head into the field in Quest of Thrashers as part of our new #communityscience program, and/or join in the Friends of Avi Kwa Ame fundraiser. THANK YOU for your support!

Through decades of monitoring we have learned that the upper El Dorado and Piute valleys in far southern #Nevada are a stronghold for Bendire’s Thrashers in NV and LeConte’s Thrashers in the world. #desertthrashers #conservation #birds 1/2

This spring, GBBO is partnering with the Arizona Game & Fish Department to attach satellite tags to #desertthrashers. We hope to find out, what happens to displaced thrashers after utility-size solar is constructed on their territories. If washes are left intact, will the thrashers still use them?

Outreach has been an important aspect of our desert thrasher program. We aim to raise awareness of these birds at all levels through volunteer programs, survey trainings, and workshops.

In 2023, DTWG partners captured and tagged the first LeConte’s Thrasher ever banded in #Nevada, the first in an ongoing study examining how these nonmigratory birds use the landscape at different times of year.

One of our proudest achievements at the Desert Thrasher Working Group is the Conservation Strategy for Desert Thrashers. That document and more can be downloaded at the DTWG website.

Beginning in 2017, GBBO biologists co-authored standardized survey protocols for desert thrashers and managed a rangewide survey effort in the United States, including implementing surveys in #Nevada.

The LeConte’s Thrasher is the better studied of the desert thrasher species, thanks especially to Jay Sheppard’s work in the Central Valley of California, where they use mainly saltbush as seen here near Corn Creek in Nevada. Photo by Jennifer Tobin.

Surveying for #desertthrashers is pretty all-consuming, but sometimes the GBBO crew just has to stop and scan for gulls and shorebirds....

Former farmland allowed to return to a more natural state with scattered small trees is ideal habitat for Bendire's Thrashers. This area near Hermosillo, Sonora hosted several breeding pairs as well as wintering birds from points north.
-
GBBO's work in #Mexico began in 2020 with a series of workshops about desert thrashers in Hermosillo, the capitol city of Sonora.
Here Carlos Gonzalez is presenting two classroom workshops, and then describing data collection in a field session.

This image shows classic Bendire's Thrasher habitat in the Sonoran Desert, as seen at a large ranch east of Hermosillo, Sonora. The question of what is causing their major population declines is a major focus of the Desert Thrasher Working Group. #birds #conservation #desertthrashers

Part of the GBBO thrasher-searching team looking for Bendire's Thrashers on a ranch near Hermosillo, for the training workshop there.

These thrasher workshops strengthened & developed our partnerships, and now our partners in Sonora have taken the helm of #thrasher surveys in #Mexico. Their work has vastly expanded current knowledge on the Bendire’s Thrasher there, critical to their #conservation.
