Re last boost, if you are making alt text, make it descriptive. You want visually impaired people to engage with your posts, be inclusive about it. You took the time to put alt text on your picture which obviously means you care in some fashion about accessibility. The truth of it is though, a simple sentence repeating the text of your post, isn't a description. Don't just tell us this is a bird, or this is a flower. Even if you identify the species, that does not give a blind viewer an idea of what is being shown, unless the person has felt the flower or had that flower or bird described to them.
Even if you don't use AI to help describe your picture, which we understand how controversial AI usage is, there are other ways to help improve your descriptions. Consider the color of the flower, the way the bird is moving, the way a cat's face looks or how your fluffy furball is positioned in the photo. Highlight those details, rather than reusing the vvague text of the post, and putting said vague text in the alt text box as a placeholder. Be respectful to those that need accessibility and desire inclusivity.

so an update about my little #python project. we are at a good starting point so far. fixed the error, and we are, somewhat, running. the bot is closed the only heavy test barrier I can see is the $gemini API key. for heavy use, it can be a bit stupid I might have it open source for the people who won a run it themselves.

for those who don't know, it is a bot that can generate #image #descriptions based on a given image like I said I can't test the functionality, but, at the very very least, I can confirm that it is connecting to the Gemini API without any errors like 400 or 403 so there is that. the last error standing in the way now is the 429 error, i've exceeded shit. if I had an API key for heavier loads, that'd be great.

I wish to begin this by saying that nothing can replace the wonderful consideration of people adding alt text to their images. It is very much appreciated, and I thank you for doing it. But for those images without said descriptions, I found something truly useful. It's called AltBot, and it adds alt text to posts without descriptions. I just followed it a few hours ago. On TweeseCake, at least, you'll hear something like "image with no description", and when you go to the next post, you'll hear the bot's explanation of the image. If you wish to folow Altbot, it can be found at [email protected]. I don't know who created it, but I sincerely thank whoever did. If only such a lovely bot could work on all sites.

I was also able to easily identify and manipulate the temperature controls in the room. In the absence of human assistance, this was a great way to get what I needed.

There were a couple of instances when the #LLM just made up things that weren't there in the room.

#Photo #descriptions are becoming essential when I'm traveling for instance. While in a hotel I used to have to rely on a human to distinguish between various shampoo/conditioner/ soap bottles, something insignificant for most people but rather frustrating for someone like me. I was able to take a quick photo and get those bottles identified while traveling this weekend. Getting a general description and queering for details got me information that I wouldn't have just by touch.

For this experiment, I asked several friends to send me photos and share #descriptions with me.

To give you one example, I was sent a photo of a table surface with a small coffee pot and a cup of coffee with foam on top. The table also had a plate of cookies, muffins, and croissants.

The #AI description described the drink in the coffee cup as a yogurt-based concoction. It also missed the cookies on the plate.

This is not to suggest that automatic descriptions aren't useful. Several tools available to #blind people are now capable of providing a good idea of the contents of photos when no descriptions are available. Apps and hardware are able to analyze photos and videos for quick access to the environment when this wasn't possible short time ago.

Even though these tools exist, automatic #descriptions should not be a substitute for alt text.

I've conducted several informal experiments over the last few weeks about alt text for #photos as described by humans and as provided by #AI systems.

#LLMS, despite providing plethora of details when describing images, still miss the nuances of what the photos contain. Human #descriptions certainly continue to be better at conveying context.

When it comes to #photo descriptions, llava-v1.6-34b is quite good now. It used to have a lot of issues. It's processing has tgotten faster and the descriptions it provides for photos is quite good even compared to some others like BingAI. It seems like #Gemini is a joke right now for this purpose.

Go here to try it if you haven't. Queery the chat bot about a deatailed description after uploading the photo.

IN case you didn't know, Google's Lookout app is now updated. It will provide better #photo #descriptions and will be able to anser questions based on photos. The updated app may only be available for Pixel phones for now. I'm not sure about this particular fact though.

So. It seems like those people who complain about being forced to write #photo #descriptions (i.e.,, complaints about being nagged about #AltText) will like Threads since you can't add alt texst on photos in the #iOS app. Congratulations. Meta has started a new Twitter with basic functionality missing. The app is also not optimized for navigation. It is almost accessible with a very few minor inaccessible things.

That's something, I suppose.
