Bobby Whitlock
Another Domino falls? Derek and the Dominoes keyboard player, harmony vocalist, and more often than not co-writer Bobby Whitlock passed away at the age of 77.
Duane Allman, Carl Radle, Tom Dowd, Jim Gordon, and now Bobby Whitlock. Everyone who had anything to do with Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs except Eric Clapton is gone.
This makes me sad. Rest in peace, Bobby Whitlock. One of the most soulful voices I’ve ever had the good fortune to hear.

My second pick:
(not very groundbreaking, I’m sure, but I like what I like)
The piano part in “Layla” by Derek and the Dominoes. (3:10)
I appreciate although don’t love the first half of the song, but will happily sit through it to get to this part in particular. If I could ever learn to play piano, I’d want to learn this.

“He had a surgical, scientific skill on the drums,” Mr. Selvin said by phone, “and he had an extraordinary gift of intuition. Every time he played on a record, he brought something special to it.”
