  1. I like to frame this as:

You can’t save the world. That’s utterly impossible.

Most you can hope to do is save *a* world.

But saving *a* world saves *the* world.

Even if #derad is a slow and methodical process that can’t change *the* world, I guide folks to changing their world. And by helping these folks change their world, I’m changing *the* world.

  3. Yes, I use Telegram.

I don’t like it but for a specific purpose it’s useful for me in my #derad work.

I use it to connect with people who want out.

One cannot ride on a high horse while doing this work. One needs to meet people where there are.

I don’t like hanging around dark places online. Thing is, one cannot appreciate the light without the darkness, and those who are trapped in darkness may have forgotten what the light is like.

Maybe I’m a quixotic fool, but I get results. :)

“The transactional ask inherent in requesting money damages community trust and goodwill.”
Main reason I don’t ask for any $$ when I engage in #derad is because of this. That damage to trust and goodwill can swiftly become a vulnerability that can erode all my credibility.

    Right on.
I have pity for them too.
All the same we’re all suffering extreme consequences because of them.
I mean, if there was some kind of movement among them to come to the truth I would feel differently.
We should all be united for the planet, at a minimum.
    What is #derad ?

We agree on the base issue. Their perspectives are dissonant from reality.

Difference is that I respond with pity, you’re angered.

And look it’s legit fucking frustration. I’m not denying that. I’m frustrated too. It’s why I engage in #derad work, to help people out of cultlike orgs.

The basics of deradicalization lead me to the realization that my pain is their drug. Fuck that noise.

    I ain’t their fix. I’m rehab.

That’s why I get creative with delivery ;)

It ain’t easy. It’s also why I’m working on making the methodology easier to understand for any who want to engage in #derad.

Toughest part is helping others who embrace this nonviolent methodology have the insight that previous nonviolent folks who Got It have had, as best as possible.

Compared to that, guiding a TERF out of her transphobia or an incel out of his misogyny is hella easy.

My framing of #derad focuses on pain & agency rather than good, evil, or the many masks pain wears.

Fear, hate, bigotry, shame, all are masks worn by pain.

It’s a step away from the moralistic & ineffable and closer to the physical & tangible.

We all know pain. We all know pain sucks.

We mostly know that pain is a damned good liar with amazing marketing.

Not as many know that pain is also unintelligent, unimaginative, boring and predictable.

    Simple and actionable?

    Ok :) Challenge accepted.

Here’s Step Zero of #derad. It’s meant for those who want to engage in #deradicalization. That it’s the same process one guides those who ask for help through is totally coincidental.

One can choose to inflict pain on others and self.

One can choose to recognize all humans as equally human, even me, even you.

Choosing to not inflict pain and to view all humans as equally human, not a bad way to live.

  17. @RiaResists @bacchus1234

    Serious question.

Is your objective retribution or justice?

One lesson I’ve learned working in #derad and related spaces is that if one harbours hate in themselves they would not allow others to hold, one isn’t fighting hate. One is instead hate’s double agent.

They are as human as we are. That is necessary for us in order to understand the enemy without becoming the enemy.

  19. Welp, today was some unwelcome news.

Increasingly it’s looking like I’m not going be able to go back to the company that I had an on the job injury with.

I am somewhat anxious over what my next steps will be looking like.

On the upside, helped someone that asked for help get started down the #derad path earlier today and incidentally helped me with a couple #mHealth issues in my own skull.

    Helping others helps oneself.

  21. Spent the last few hours crossing a few streams.

I am doing some work for @hopeconf.

I’m taking a look at some stuff @pluralistic has shared at the event over the years.

And I’m incorporating a little of that in my #derad work, helping those who want out of cultlike organizations find their way out.

As Cory said, once one has principles that are simple, that can anticipate and correct for future lapses, they can inform everything you do.

  23. so i did a thing on the reddit

please hate me later for it after you offer alternatives that are accessible to the ones who need it - this is an effort to reach out to those who want out of cultlike organizations

and those who want to learn how to get out themselves

#derad work is probably the most fun thing i’ve done in years, but more importantly it helps those that want out to get out as safely as possible from a mental health perspective. :)

  39. My ethical core and #StepZero of #derad have a premise that I would deeply love to refute.

And I welcome attempts to refute this theory.

Most think, eg, people choose to pursue power, then decide to inflict pain on others and self.

But the reality is that the choice for that path to power is merely a fig leaf on the choice to inflict pain on others and self.

Because power achieved without infliction of pain is possible, and in fact is preferable.

  41. @Daojoan

    Controversial opinion:

My approach to my political adversaries is, instead of activating them until all that hate and pain addles their brain to the point they lack cognitive ability, instead I prefer working with them to find our actual disagreements.

Studies reliably demonstrate that ideas associated with left are overwhelmingly popular with those who identify right. But the second you slap a D on that idea, thoughtstopping kicks in.

    Another use for #derad.

  43. “Love conquers hate.”

    Annoying pithy phrase, right?

    Actually, no.

    It’s not at all wrong.

    And the most bonkers part?

Hate may have factions, edifices of lies, cultists turned killers, and propaganda besides.

But love can defeat all of that without lifting a finger in violence or a lifting a voice in anger.

  45. One simple thought that can change everything.

An interaction where you feel pain from a cruel word can change to an interaction where the one throwing the word gets a moment of clarity based on one simple thought.

Mental heath that was intractable and untreatable, now nbd.

    Same thought.

We all can choose to inflict pain on others and self, or not.

Why not choose to /not/ inflict pain on others and self?

  49. #ChristmasPresent

Thought I would share why Aphrodite is my name.

Which three countries and Interpol would concur on.

I liked the idea of spreading love even having gone through decades of pain.

Later on when I learned she was a deity of war that used love as a weapon, that was a bonus.

That last bit accurately describes #derad. It’s fighting a war against hate and fascism that uses love as the weapon.

  51. I know I’m not the best with #CWs.

    I’m working on getting better.

Part of it is that I am only human and I make mistakes.

And part of it is that I do my best to couch my language to not traumatize others even when discussing nightmares none should have to live through.

But I want to be better at this.

And it is a juggling act. Won’t and can’t deny this. I want the #derad posts to be seen, but I know certain phrases are triggering.

I do attempt to defang their cruel words when I can.

  53. CW: Far right language dissection

If one chooses to inflict pain on others and self, every projection is a confession.

Take that one line one who doesn’t get he’s only a useful fool.

“Facts don’t are about your feelings.”

What’s tragicomic is that this is their objective.

They want those foolish enough to follow them to embrace hate at their core.

    Because hate addles the mind.

A hateful mind has a very hard time incorporating new factual information from outside the fount of hate. #derad
