The #depaving groups reclaiming #UrbanGreenSpace
by Jennifer Cole, Mar 21, 2026
"It took two years, but finally, in 2025, Jean Norwood’s dream of turning the parking lot at #MorningstarMissionary Baptist Church in #PortlandOR, into a play area for children and a #FoodGarden with #FruitTrees came true. Working with Norwood to bring her vision to reality was #DepavePortland. Since 2008, the Portland-based nonprofit has been digging up paved surfaces, freeing the trapped soil underneath and #regreening the newly reclaimed space.
"There are an estimated 2 billion parking places in the United States, an area comparable in size to the entire state of Vermont. That figure does not include #sidewalks, schoolyards or other paved surfaces, which, along with #CarParks, trap heat, intensifying the urban #HeatIsland effect in some cases by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit compared with surrounding areas. '#Asphalt makes your space hotter in the summertime, and colder in the wintertime,' Norwood says.
"When asphalt is removed and the soil beneath is exposed, those dynamics begin to reverse. The ground can absorb and store #carbon, and #rainwater is able to filter into the soil rather than running off into sewers. #Trees and #gardens can be planted that provide shade and a #habitat is created for #birds, #insects and other #wildlife.
"This was Norwood’s dream for the parking lot at Morningstar. Going from concrete to fruit trees, though, takes patience. 'First,' she says, 'there was about six months of planning and submitting requests for permitting.'
"Depave guided Norwood and the church through all of it, even seeking out grants to help cover costs. When it came time to depave the parking lot, volunteers recruited by Depave used crowbars, shovels, bare hands and wheelbarrows to lift out the pavement and daylight the soil beneath. Depave also worked with Morningstar on finding contractors to build the play area and raised #GardenBeds, and on choosing the plants for each newly #regreened space. It’s a process Depave has perfected at more than 82 sites across Portland."

really interesting read
From Australia to Ontario, cities are taking up unnecessary stretches of concrete and asphalt, allowing nature to take hold in their place.

#depaving as a #climate adaptation strategy for cities is brilliant and practical: by increasing shade, reducing #flood risk, improving mental health, lowering temps, and helping the #bees. I love this idea
Ok this is one aspect of #degrowth I can get behind, and would be great for volunteering. #solarpunk #cities

Il "depaving" è una pratica che sta pian piano prendendo coraggio: consiste nel togliere cemento e asfalto urbano per liberare il suolo, contrastando il clima e arricchendo la biodiversità. Nato a Portland, ora fiorisce globalmente. Vi racconto le città che stanno "depavimentando" di più.

#Environment #ClimateChange #Cities #Urbanism #Depaving: "The idea of depaving, sometimes known as desealing, is a simple one – replace as much concrete, asphalt and other forms of hard landscaping as possible with plants and soil. It's been around since at least 2008, when the Depave group in Portland was founded. Proponents say depaving allows water to soak into the ground, which reduces flooding in times of heavy rain – aiding the "sponginess" of cities. Native plants help wildlife cling on in urban spaces, and by planting trees you can increase shade, protecting residents from heatwaves. Injecting city streets with greenery may even improve people's mental health, too.
But if depaving is ever going to really take off, it will have to expand beyond a handful of eager environmentalists and volunteers. With the climate crisis deepening, some cities and even entire regions are beginning to adopt depaving as part of their climate adaptation strategies. It's time, some say, to start smashing up our concrete streets in a big way – to create spaces better for nature."

@Nathanpboston #Waltham Land Trust recently bought a stretch of waterfront on #HardyPond and it’s got a legacy parking space. We’re planning a #depaving party this spring—we’ve got loads of volunteer help but haven’t thought yet about disposal/reuse of the asphalt. Ideas and donations will be welcome.
Hope to see you as usual at the #WalthamFarmersMarket - we open June 1st.

Got two little baby pomegranate #trees planted today. Building our backyard orchard one step at a time. Next up will be plums, and then I think we will have to wait another year for the rest. (We have some hardscaping work and #depaving to do first) Someday, our patio will be surrounded by fruit trees and I can’t wait.
