Another reminder that one of the best things you can do for a walkable, lovable city is make space for double rows of street/yard trees that create #KissingCanopies above sidewalks. Especially as cities get hotter. Vancouver has many of them — not instead of density, but as part of #DensityDoneWell.

12. So I’ll keep calling for more badly needed density, more change, but always #DensityDoneWell. Listening/learning, smart design, multi-modal, with livable amenities. Let’s keep talking about #NIMBY & #YIMBY. But let’s DEFINITELY not leave out my favourite, QUALITY IN MY BACKYARD #QIMBY. Thanks.

This is one of the highest density places in North America. Not that I needed one, but my downtown Vancouver elevated courtyard is a constant reminder that “density vs green” is a false choice; that green is PART of #DensityDoneWell; and that we should be building more courtyards.

Another reminder that urban density & lush street trees creating a “Kissing Canopy” over the sidewalk and street are completely compatible. It’s actually PART of #DensityDoneWell. You just have to make it a actual design priority. As this very dense block in my downtown #Vancouver neighbourhood illustrates.

The main thing that makes it hard to have nature and green in cities isn’t density of buildings or density of people — it's density of CARS. And the better you’ve designed the density of people and buildings, with real multi-modal choices, the fewer cars you need.
