Today is the anniversary of the first fatal accident involving the "Demon Core", a 6.2-kilogram plutonium sphere from the Manhattan Project.
At 21:55h on 21st August 1945, physicist Harry Daghlian accidentally dropped a tungsten carbide brick onto the core at Los Alamos, releasing a lethal dose of radiation that caused his death 25 days later.
It's worth remember that even the wise, clever and intelligent are capable of being stupid.
