Just heard "an expert" say something stupid on an In Our Time best-of-archive show.
Basically, he said, if you look at a piece of radioactive material then you [can] stop it radiating.
Uh-Oh! #DemonCore

We're practically in the middle of October now so it's important to get these public service announcements out there before Halloween:
Keep your children safe!
If you see a sudden flash of blue light in your home, be sure to check that the kids haven't somehow gotten their hands on a Demon Core.
Be sure to show them how to handle it safely!
The more you know!

They're not laughing now.
Serious question: Why are we seeing so many Demon Core memes now?

I am one of today's 10,000 for the #DemonCore; a post over on lobste.rs about it led me to read up on the memeification of an accident I'd never even heard of until today.
What a thing.

The internet, once a vibrant hub of human interaction and creativity, has become a shadow of its former self, largely due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its pervasive influence. This transformation has sparked a debate over the very essence of our digital lives, with some proposing that the internet is essentially “dead.” This theory, known as the “Dead Internet Theory,” posits that AI-powered bots have taken over, steering culture and content towards nefarious ends.
The theory gained traction from a 2021 thread on the Agora Roads Macintosh Cfa forum, which suggested that the internet died around 2016. It claimed that the US government was using AI to gaslight the global population. While the more outlandish claims remain speculative, the core idea resonates with many: the internet feels empty, devoid of genuine human interaction. Indeed, reports indicate that bots now account for over half of all web traffic, with malicious bots making up a significant portion.
The proliferation of AI-generated content has exacerbated this issue. AI now assists in writing a substantial portion of code on platforms like GitHub and generates a significant amount of content on social media. For instance, before Elon Musk’s takeover, an estimated 11-13% of Twitter accounts were bots, responsible for a disproportionate amount of content. YouTube engineers even coined the term “the inversion” to describe the point at which fake views would surpass real ones.
This AI takeover extends beyond social media. AI-generated poetry, films, podcasts, and news articles are now commonplace. The release of generative AI models like ChatGPT has only accelerated this trend, creating a deluge of synthetic media that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from human-created content. This has led to a scenario where the internet is flooded with lifeless digital content, making it challenging for genuine human creativity to thrive.
The implications of this shift are profound. The internet, once a tool for connecting people and fostering creativity, has become a battleground of bots and AI-generated content. This has not only diminished the quality of online interactions but also poses a significant epistemological threat. The sheer volume of AI-generated content makes it difficult for users to discern truth from falsehood, leading to a decline in trust in media and institutions.
This phenomenon is not limited to social media. AI-generated content can manipulate public opinion, disrupt financial markets, and even create non-consensual pornography. The Europol Innovation Lab has highlighted the potential for AI to be used in disinformation campaigns, influencing politics and elections, and contributing to fraud.
Efforts to regulate the creation and use of generative AI are lagging behind its rapid adoption. There is an urgent need for international cooperation and new privacy laws to address these challenges. The technology to identify bots and deep fakes must keep pace with their creation to preserve the integrity of the internet.
The internet’s transformation due to AI is reminiscent of the profound changes brought about by the advent of nuclear weapons. Both technologies have reshaped the world, tested without public consent, and concentrated power in the hands of a few. Just as nuclear weapons rendered certain previous technologies obsolete, generative AI threatens to obliterate genuine human interaction online.
In conclusion, while the internet may not be “dead” in the literal sense, it has undeniably changed for the worse. The rise of generative AI has poisoned the well of online content, making it less fun, creative, and connecting. Large-scale government regulation, though heavy-handed, may be necessary to combat the economic incentives driving this trend. As we stand on the precipice of this new digital age, it is crucial to heed these warnings and work towards preserving the essence of the internet that once brought us together.
