  1. The #internet’s initial promise of #democratisation has been undermined by centralised platforms like Facebook, which, while empowering users, also created chokepoints for corporate and political control: This “#enshittification” and “#despotification” are inherent to centralised architectures. #Decentralised protocols like ActivityPub and Bluesky offer a potential solution, empowering users and distributing power across the network. liberalism.org/p/enshittificat #Fedizen #Fediverse #ActivityPub #News

  3. Democratising Creativity: Beyond Musical Gatekeeping

Say no to AI-generated music!" — said people who could afford and master musical instruments and high-end professional computers for recording. They have made concert tickets inaccessible and unaffordable, haven't admitted that they stole old musical works without explicitly disclosing it until somebody sued, and can't even fulfill listeners' personalised needs.

  5. [PARUTION]

  7. When ever I hear "democratisation" from a US #tech company, I know it doesn't mean public control of anything, or heaven forbid, accountability for what you're pushing.

That buzzword is dead to me. Just look at what "democratisation of currency" achieved: Power for criminals to buy elections.

  13. @GhostOnTheHalfShell @cryptadamist Yes.

What they call ’#democratisation’ is a scam. The #cypherpunks etc whatever they like to think of themselves, want nothing but complete freedom from enforcement of any laws on them.

They want the ”freedom” for the will of the elected majority to not apply to them.

It ends the rule of law, it ends democracy. And as lawless spaces have to governed by somebody in any case, it turns the structure of society into a #mafia.

  15. (...) the strategic use of AI's controversiality threatens the role of public controversy as a force of the #democratisation of research and innovation, and risks to undermine its capacity for inclusion and problematisation. (...) This situation not only has implications for our understanding of #AI controversies as occasions for the democratisation of knowledge; it also has consequences for the methodology of #controversy #analysis

  16. @sebsauvage

  18. When my parents were born, computers were manufactured by secret research institutions funded by the military. When I was born, computers were made by a handful of large corporations, and the prices were exorbitant. When my son was born, open-source-hardware-based cheap computers the size of credit cards were being made by small independent teams funded by ordinary people via public-funding web sites. The #democratisation of #hardware has done much good to society.

But even after all these years, commercial #software manufacture is still an exclusive domain of specialist practitioners. More so, #programming language creation is practised only by the elite. Yet, there is an accelerated explosion of new languages. This hints at the general dismay amongst ordinary programmers with elite-designed languages. Perhaps it's time to democratise programming language design, at least as to myriad syntaxes within a single paradigmatic family that possesses the same semantic. For instance, C++, Java, and C# belong to one family; OCaml, F#, Reason, another family; Haskell, Idris, Agda, still another.

During compilation, the compiler transforms any syntax within one family into a standardised AST, and continues from there. And during programming, the IDE translates the AST into the programmer's preferred syntax and presents that code to the programmer.

At its core, programming is all about the meaning of the programme, not the appearance thereof. So, let the programmers choose whatever syntax they fancy, or even let them design their own syntax. Perhaps, then, programming languages that cater to non-practitioners (doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.), those not designed by, and for the elite, may emerge.

  24. When I see #data (#worldcup #qatar) or centralised (#birdsite) control I’m reminded of AdHocRacy we proposed 20 yrs ago in: BlueStar, a privacy centric location aware system
#adhocracy: allows the storage of location-relevant information in such a way that it cannot be controlled or censored by a minority of individuals
    * #information #democratisation
    * data in a physical location without fixed storage #infrastructure
    * tagging physical locations without #censorship.
