  1. In his latest article for #NewPolitics, #EddyJokovich has written up a boilerplate policy platform which would make for a great beginning in cleaning up our polity and laid the groundwork for substantial progresive legislation. It’s time we took a broom to our wokring democracy and deliver for the people.

“As we’ve discussed many times before, the immediate reforms are available right now: real-time disclosure and tighter limits on political donations; comprehensive registration of professional and in-house lobbyists and restrictions for how much access they can gain with ministers; publication of ministerial diaries; enforceable cooling-off periods for former ministers; stronger whistleblower laws and protections for journalists; truth-in-political-advertising, effective and workable Freedom of Information rules and a properly resourced National Anti-Corruption Commission operating with greater transparency than what it has shown over the past three years.”

Now, Jokovich isn’t exceptional in the sense that he alone has the answers to our political problems, but he neatly summarises what most of us are thinking and hence what most of us want done. There’s lot we need to do so we need govt to prioritise. For my money (my vote), Eddy’s list above would make a great election platform for the Greens to campaign on (and sell). In truth, I’d vote for anyone pledging to work and fight for these initial reforms.

  3. The Middle TDG

The second of four TDG stages.

Local TDGs are still merging. Constitutions are being re-written. The early builders have more skills for TDG governance than when they started.

  5. Just left the candidate debate for Calgary Centre. It was a full house and there was a large overflow crowd outside listening via loudspeakers. The Calgary Centre Conservative incumbent is out of step with his riding, but he'll likely keep winning due to our ridiculous first-past-the-post system that the Liberals promised to reform the last time they won this riding. People voted strategically based on that promise and the Liberals backtracked. They never learn.

  7. The Mechanics of Changing the World lays out in exhaustive and persuasive detail why our current democracies aren't fit for purpose and identifies the four spheres which are democracy’s present-day 'choke points:' monopoly media, political money, skewed electoral machinery and civic alienation.

  9. This is historic. More power to the SA Government and good luck for the inevitable High Court challenge. Of course, I must point out that this idea has been Greens policy for twenty years, but that doesn't matter right now. We need this. In fact, the world needs this precedent.
