Per #MadeleineRogers [1], the abuse of procedures like fast-tracking is a component of #DemocraticBacksliding that is "buried in confusing complexities that are difficult for non-experts to disentangle,... outside of the attention of the general public". Rogers gives an analysis + specific suggestions [1] of how to improve #DemocraticResilience [2] before it's too late. Not easy because of the complexity, but doable.

  10. Gerrymandering or not, however you slice it, this does not change my view that drawing districts ought to be a process left to independent commissions based on as transparent and nonpartisan a methodology as possible. The United Kingdom knows better than to have politicians pick voters, as does even Brazil.

  14. One of the most dangerous myths about democratic norms is that they collapse only when a majority rejects them.

    That’s rarely how it happens.

When violations of dignity, equality, or restraint are repeated often enough, and face few consequences, the boundaries of what feels acceptable begin to move.

Not all at once. But steadily.

That is how the moral environment of a society changes.

It is my opinion that the hypocritical mask of the West slipped and the true, contemptible, authoritarian, totalitarian nature of the so called Western alleged democracies is revealed.

  24. Achieving meaningful lives within planetary boundaries?

"Renewables are already much cheaper than fossil fuels. Alas, fossil fuels are up to three times as profitable. Thus capital forces governments to link electricity prices to the price of the most expensive liquified natural gas, not of cheap solar energy. Similarly, building and maintaining motorways is many times more lucrative for private contractors, car manufacturers and oil companies than a modern network of superfast, safe public railways. So capitalists continue to push our governments to subsidise fossil fuels and road building, even while the world burns."

"...Capital uses every tool at its disposal – debt, sanctions, coups and even outright military invasion to keep southern economies subordinate."

  26. #DemocraticBacksliding / Likud MK threatens Arab colleague with firing squad during removal hearing

The Knesset Committee discussed removing MK Ayman Odeh following his January social media post expressing joy over “the release of hostages and prisoners” and calling to “free both peoples from the yoke of occupation.” During the hearing, Likud MK Osher Shkalim shouted at Odeh: “In another country they would put you in front of a firing squad.” Committee chair Ofir Katz called Odeh “the eighth front” and said “your presence contaminates the Knesset, there’s no place here for such terrorists.”

The legal advisor clarified the discussion must focus only on the January tweet, not other statements. Odeh defended his position, stating the government “commits crimes against humanity in Gaza” and accused officials who “justified killing 50,000 Gazans” of lacking moral authority.

The Association for Civil Rights condemned the proceedings as “fascism.”

Apropos ‘democratic backsliding’ - I should note I’m using the term quite liberally here. Israel was never truly a #democracy, as ethno-states by definition cannot be. But this authoritarian drift now targets anyone perceived as an enemy of the state of course. See kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/1147
