I have news for you:
The Brandmauer never existed.
It was always a political convenience, not a democratic principle.
The CDU does not care about the Brandmauer. It cares about power.
And once again, radicalised conservatives are doing what conservatives have done throughout history: convincing themselves that they can use fascists without empowering fascism.
They cannot.
They will.
And when democracy finally lies in ruins, they will insist they never meant for this to happen.
But history will be less forgiving.
It will remember who opened the door.
And who stood beside it, holding the keys.

When a citizen points to their country's constitution as evidence that their government's actions are unlawful, that apparently renders the citizen a foreign agent. The message should be clear to all those even considering lending the country the benefit of the doubt: "Freedom has no place in Russia!" Per #MadeleineRogers [1], the abuse of procedures like fast-tracking is a component of #DemocraticBacksliding that is "buried in confusing complexities that are difficult for non-experts to disentangle,... outside of the attention of the general public". Rogers gives an analysis + specific suggestions [1] of how to improve #DemocraticResilience [2] before it's too late. Not easy because of the complexity, but doable.

Gerrymandering or not, however you slice it, this does not change my view that drawing districts ought to be a process left to independent commissions based on as transparent and nonpartisan a methodology as possible. The United Kingdom knows better than to have politicians pick voters, as does even Brazil.
