In case you missed it: a fine article by Pascal Lamy on the Delors method.
At our best, I think the Commission can still do long-term planning and short-term tactical adjustments.
But endless crises which necessitate rapid head-of-government haggling, and fear of demagogues, are making it harder to systematically develop an EU vision.
We shouldn't let it atrophy! Else short-term panicked improv is all we'll be good at.

But to return to Jacques #Delors: at a time when he was being vilified by the British press, he remained an inspiration to a new generation of Europeans. As a young civil servant in Whitehall, in the brief time I served there before joining the Commission, I had his portrait pinned above my desk. Up Yours, Brexit.

Another was Irish Tánaiste Dick Spring, whose achievement that night must have been the crowning glory of his career. And then there was a certain young Brussels correspondent for the Daily Telegraph. The British Minister (Tory Tim Sainsbury) kicked all officials out of the room so he could brief this hack privately. If #Delors was the best of Europe, that hack was & is the worst.

Jacques #Delors has died today. As a young man he saw the appalling cruelty, #bitterness & division that extreme #nationalism led to. He spearheaded a wonderful idea, that people should cooperate 4 the good of all. He will be greatly missed. #rejoinEU https://rb.gy/3kmtws

Delors sent his Commissioner for Regional Policy (the Scot, Bruce Millan) home to bed and stayed himself knocking heads together until everyone got a little bit of something. That was one of the last Council meetings to take place on the 14th floor of the old Charlemagne building, before it moved across the Rue de la Loi to the (then) new Justus Lipsius building. In hindsight, it was in many ways the high water mark of the Community approach to European integration. #Delors
