Spent the evening migrating my laptop (XPS 9700) from Debian to Alpine.
<gasp - horror - shudder>
Installing is a different experience compared to generic PC hardware. There was a number of things I had to chase manually like wifi, audio, Dell firmware support but it wasn't a big deal. Debian takes care of those things for you on the laptop during install (non-free install ofc).
The Alpine wiki is quite good. Everything I needed to get things going was there.
Network Manager is still a pain in the a55 but on a laptop I'll deal with it. Ha.

After 8 years, my Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop abruptly died. It was working normally one minute, completely dead the next. I've been poking around inside and ran through the hard reset procedure, disconnecting the battery, draining power, etc, with no luck. My guess is a dead motherboard. I don't use it enough to justify buying a new one, so thinking about shipping it off to Dell for a replacement board

I just did a "poor man's" repair to my laptop's keyboard.
Some keys were no longer responding normally to key presses. "R" was the worst.
I pulled the "R" keycap off the keyboard. I cleaned the switch underneath and put it back, but it was still not working well. If I tapped the switch directly without the keycap, it worked fine. I figured tolerances must have gone off somewhere, so I slapped 4 layers of masking tape under the keycap. It works much better now. I also did the "E". I have other keys to do, but I'm taking a break from the repair to consider my options, and see whether what I've done holds up.
I do welcome advice regarding the use of alternative material rather than masking tape for this fix.

Noticed that my Dell XPS 9530 is now being offered Windows 11 24H2.
I think I'll wait until after the weekend (and #DDDBrisbane) to install it, even though it's my understanding it's a pretty minor update.

My new Dell XPS laptop has an unmarked touchpad with the barest of light mechanical actions - meaning i can't see the buttons nor feel when I've pressed them. Who thought this was a good idea??

Ooh, it looks like the Intel MIPI IPU6 webcam driver should land in Linux 6.10! 🤞

This is the type of webcam used in recent laptops like the Dell XPS series, which only worked ootb with Windows and Ubuntu. This should mean it will be easier to guarantee webcam support across Linux distros again, soon!

Does anyone have hands on a laptop with a Copilot key? If so, what actual keycode does it emit? Apparently Super+C is the standard shortcut for Copilot on Windows 11, so I would not be surprised if the key just emits that like the "Presentation mode" keys emitting Super+P…
(I could help you figure this out in a Linux install, but I have no idea how to investigate it in Windows)
