Had a bit of craic today at An Trasnú - the Cunnigar Crossing 2026. This is a novel walk across the expanses of mud and sand across the mouth of the Brickey river from Dungarvan town around the tip of the Cunnigar and across 4km of low tide sand flats over to Báile na nGall.
This is only really viable a few times a year and I’ve missed it every other year so I was delighted it worked out this year.

The sunsets are spectacular across the country at the moment so I decided to see if I could snap something with a bit more going on.
The mackerel are here now so there are lots of folks fishing off the pier wall.
Got a couple of very lucky shots there.

Just before the Ballyvoyle viaduct I took a short detour down to the shore by the mouth of the Dalligan river on the eastern end of Clonea strand along the way and came across these crab shells.
The green shore crab upper shell was put there by a hooded crow that was scavenging in the rock pools.
The second picture is the underside plate from a spider crab. At a guess its feet would have been 50-70cm across given the size of this plate. Nifty.

Lovely day for a walk on the Waterford Greenway. I did an out and back 10km stroll from Clonea to Durrow via the Ballyvole viaduct and Tunnel this time.
The diversity of flowering plants and blossom along this particular part of the route is always a treat.
Wild roses, foxgloves and wild strawberrries are just starting to appear now, there was no sign of them two weeks ago. -

Newly elected CATU Waterford chair Aoife with member Michelle holding the trades' council flag at the Waterford May Day event marking the 90 year anniversary of Waterford anti-fascists going to fight in Spain.
CATU Waterford recently obtained an observer seat on the Waterford Council of Trade Unions, in order to better coordinate with other groups locally.

I had a sunset stroll along the Cunnigar this evening and the birds put on a spectacular dusk chorus.
No photos but this screenshot from the Merlin app gives an idea.
Any day when you hear the call of the curlew is a good day.

Who knew that murmering gentle words of encouragement at the television could make you lose your voice?

The final batch of photos from my walk along the beach today.
The furze literally bathes the place in a fabulous scent of coconut.
The traditional Port Láirge flag at the end of the Cunnigar has now been joined by a tricolour. This is unusual and I have a strong suspicion that the motives of the person who hung it wouldn’t match mine. I’m thinking of adding a refugees welcome flag.

Lovely spring day for a walk in the sand dunes of the Cunnigar.
It’s a few weeks early for the orchids but the other usual suspects were all out.
