  1. Just arrived, the result of a rabbit hole I went down recently.
Harich 'Communism without Growth' (1975 Ge, 2034 Sp)
Not available in English ttbomk, but I can read this translation.
Really interesting engagement with the Meadows Limits to Growth report, from the GDR. Parallel to another from Zagreb at the same time.

The quality of the bits I've read is great.

Verso UK should bring it out.

  2. Fedi Canadian political curiosity of the day:

Was followed by someone with Canadian flag emojis all over their profile. Their bio said they were interested in climate change and social justicey stuff (including hashtag "politics" which will be important later) and said they would "BLOCK" anti-LGBTQ+ folks and racists. It also said #NeverVoteConservative. Nationalism aside, (nationalism is terrifyingly normalised with Canadians) that all seemed good to me but then they followed their line about blocking those bad folks with "Communists --Block" which is ... weird. So, I messaged them and asked why they followed me and also block communists, to which they responded that their vision is partially impaired right now, and they didn't see "communism" in my bio. They thanked me for telling them and promptly blocked me. They said they are for "degrowth" but without "politics," which seems bizarre to me. Anyone encountered this before? How can you change the way the world works enough to get "degrowth" without "politics"? And why is "communism" "political" but "never vote conservative" not?

(Also, degrowth without communism/anarchism isn't gonna cut it, but that's beside the point.)

  3. Older white guy rants to me and a fem colleague about how the Ford government lets private long-term care coorprations/condo boards and landlords grift the living hell out of regular people, but prefaces his rant with, "and beleive me, I'm no socialist." I couldn't get a word in edge-wise, but I'd love to a have asked, "why not? And what do you want then?" I'm so glad that generally folks seem much more willing to use socialism and identify as a socialist (at least in the Anglo-Americas I experience) than they were even just 10 years ago, but encounters like these are bizzare. If you have a problem with private ownership of land, you really ought to have a problem with a socio-economic system that privileges just such an arrangement and trends, pretty well inevitability, towards (neo)liberalism and then the slide to fascism. Socialism (/anarchism/communism/communalism, etc.) is the alternative, friend.

  4. @WorkingFamilies I think living should be enough for a decent life. Work if you can, but 40 hours a week (full-time) is way too much. #degrowth #DegrowthCommunism

  5. There is a very simple way to achieve the minimalist lifestyle. I call it minimalistic income.

  6. Lade upp mina anteckningar från kapitel 0-4 av Slow Down: How Degrowth Communism Can Save the Earth av Kohei Saito.

  7. I'm kind of annoyingly becoming a fan of Kōhei Saitō... Fan is a weird word to use for "public intellectuals," and even weirder for specific theorists l, but I'm not sure what else to call it at this point. Would love to hear more about that first question though:

  8. "The literature on degrowth routinely argues (appropriately so) that the global north rather than the global south must be the target for change, but it may well be that the vanguard for degrowth resides, paradoxically, in the global south. It may be that subconscious bias causes us to believe that the global south must catch up with the economic production of the wealthiest states, rather than encouraging us to imagine that the wealthy states need to catch up to the level of consciousness displayed by the most radical societies in the global south."

  9. Can economic growth be decoupled from emissions? Yes, for sure, easily even.

Can economic growth be decoupled from environmental degradation in general? Absolutely not. The sheer throughput of materials through the economy, from extraction to waste disposal, must decrease. If we address GHG emissions in isolation from topsoil and biodiversity loss, we will fail to preserve the ecosystems on which we depend for life.

  10. "When Kohei Saito decided to write about #degrowthcommunism, his editor was understandably skeptical. #Communism is unpopular in #Japan. Economic growth is gospel. So a book arguing that Japan should view its current condition of population decline and economic stagnation not as a crisis, but as an opportunity for #Marxist reinvention, sounded like a tough sell."

  11. Today's quote from Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto by Kōhei Saitō:
"We must say it plainly—communism or barbarism! This is the only choice left! It’s obvious we must choose communism. We must overcome our reflex to rely on experts and the state and proceed down the path to self-governance and mutual aid." (180)

  12. Started reading the newly published and (already, clearly) excellent Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto by Kōhei Saitō.

Unfortunately, the publisher or translator decided that Americans need it Americanized so the temp units should be Fahrenheit when surely no one reading this book wouldn't understand the Celsius.

When I read that Nordhaus' recommended path forward warms the earth by 38.3° by 2100 I nearly lost my shit.

#KoheiSaito #Saito #DegrowthCommunism #Systemsturz

  14. "Saitō Kōhei has been a hot commodity in Japan since the surprise success of his Marx-inspired Hito shinsei no shihonron, published in English as Marx in the Anthropocene. In a candid interview, Saitō defends his vision of a postgrowth, postcapitalist society and explores practical steps toward that ambitious goal."
