I've been reading about the localization in popular culture recently, and this article addresses that issue with respect to pop music in SE Asia.

My guess is that Kpop will no longer grow as it once did in these markets, but will not disappear, perhaps coming instead to occupy a similar position to that it enjoys in the west -- a niche interest.

    >> -- When we talk about globalization, we’re often really talking about Americanization, particularly in the entertainment industry. For so long, it was the U.S. That dominated all of these entertainment industries. So does that mean that America’s dead when it comes to soft power, that American sway is really over?

-- Not dead, but certainly weakening in a big way...over the years, as you say, a lot of people have been recruited to American ideas and American goals by the soft power of film, of music, and maybe to a lesser extent, gaming. And America’s dominance over these industries is definitely in retreat...America controls the pipes of distribution if you like, and thereby controls a lot the profits. But when it comes to the content itself, America, which used to be so mighty in this area is a fading force.<<

  3. Are We Still in #Neoliberalism?

The past fifty years have been the era of unchallenged #marketdominance in all areas of life. But with the #globalupheaval brought on by the Trump #tradewar, are we seeing the #neoliberal order unraveling?

In this episode of #ConfrontingCapitalism, Vivek Chibber and Melissa Naschek discuss the historic origins of neoliberalism, so-called “#proworker#conservatism, and the prospects for #deglobalization.

How did Germans imagine global order after the Second World War — in the event that they won? When I invited Prof. Derman a few months ago to talk about his book, my curiosity was only for the past; but now, his research seems to echo so much of the present. #HKUSTLibrary #HKUSTResearch #history #deglobalization

  5. "This article presents how global governance […] targets moved from sovereign to corporate entities and its source from multilateral financial institutions to domestic U.S. institutions. […] The article describes the recursive process that led the U.S. government to assume global regulatory powers and to initiate deglobalization in its trade war against the European Union and China."

  7. This interview gives a refreshing perspective about China's economic problems, I find. And how the West should handle that.

The "Sanction not sanctions" idea could help defeat autocrats. Though the way it worked with Russia was too helpful for the oligarchs. It would need to be more targeted to normal citizens.

  9. “As Chang proclaimed: “Globalization is almost dead. Free trade is almost dead. And a lot of people still wish they would come back, but I really don’t think they will be back for a while.” “

With the world becoming more and more of a “global village” where people, capital, and ideas move freely and instantaneously there is no turning back on #globalization.

People are just becoming more aware of the fact that it is not very clever to have all of your eggs put in one basket, particularly if that basket is far away from your immediate reach.

What is happening now is not #deglobalization, it is #diversification.

  10. "Is this the end of #globalization?"

No, & we really need to stop this unhelpful conversation. It's astounding how quickly this has become the lazy Narrative™️ and conventional wisdom among the media & the #Davos punditry, without evidence.

Again, compositional shifts & the slowing/suspension of growth but maintenance of very high <levels> of stocks & flows of trade/finance/migration is not #deglobalization. It's certainly not remotely the end of globalization.

    🤷‍♂️

  11. The problem with all of the #deglobalization and "Death of #globalization" arguments is that the data on international trade, finance, and migration don't support them.

Changes in the composition of global flows & connections are well underway, and they are important. But they do not constitute "deglobalization" in any meaningful way.
