In support of user autonomy, it would be nice to see #Mastodon clients notifying users when a profile they’re searching is on a remote instance that’s blocked/ #defederated by their instance, and then offer to load it for them directly if they still want to see it.
Instance admins have the right to choose what gets federated to their servers, but users shouldn’t be totally at the whim of those admins decisions.
This is one of the things i’m prioritizing with the Agora client i’m working on.

I find one of the most helpful ways you can encourage people to leave hellsites like #Twitter and #Facebook to try out #mastodon / the #fediverse / etc isn't to just tell them "join mastodon" and hope they end up picking a good instance. Actually go the extra step of finding an instance that, to you, an experienced user, seems well moderated, and at least somewhat aligns with that person's interests so they'll find other people's content to keep them interested, and suggest that one directly. @eldritch.cafe remains the first Mastodon instance I ever joined, after my friend and I specifically looked for a server that allows nonsexual female nipples without being focused on actual sex work, and all in all it's been a great experience (and has completely ruined me towards any server with less than a 5,000 character limit, haha).
Especially considering how tech-inclined so many (pre-Twitter-migration) fedi users are--keep in mind that most of us (me included) are not so knowledgeable about this stuff straight out the gate 😜 We need a little extra guidance, and if you truly think that the fedi is a better alternative, you need to make the extra effort in improving #accessibility to your chosen platform. (It also helps tremendously in making sure that someone's first interaction with mastodon isn't on a huge server with little to no moderation, opening them way more up to attacks from racists, etc than if they had started on a heavily moderated server that is already #defederated from instances that allow that abhorrent behavior)

I don't really have a horse in the fight, but isn't the assertion that some people or whole instances be automatically walled off from the wider Fediverse sort of against the point?

In a world where it was server defaults but individual over-rideable it’d be a lot harder to see stuff from #defederated networks by default. So even if someone reshares content, it wouldn’t appear in the timeline by default. You’d have to manually opt in to see stuff from the server or be following the author of the reshared content to see it on your timeline.
This way you aren’t at the mercy of an admin to see the content. But you also don’t risk the server being polluted with no way out

With all this current talk of who should or should not #federate with whom, I have a very basic question:
What is the mechanism for a random Mastodon user to figure out which instances their instance (or any other instance) has #federated or #defederated with? Is there any interface or public data to expose that information? Or is it all a matter of rumor, side channels, and insider knowledge?

I am pondering putting up a #mastodon instance.
The main thrust is that it would be focused on hosting FOSS and similar technology folks.
To fund it I would allow corporate accounts that were encouraged to pay some amount so that the instance would be financially viable.
TOS would have a strict "no spam" clause (still working on the wording).
My question is, would I just get instantly #defederated and if so, how can I avoid that?

But Newsie is also where indigenous journalist and inclusive Heathen accounts that I follow are at.
This system where—*surprise!*—the admin can turn out to be a total POS after all the good people already signed up is dysfunctional.
#Mastodon needs real accountability and community control of its instances, otherwise this will keep happening, and the #Fediverse will splinter.

CW: Mastodon difficulties, no easy solution
I’ve run into my first major #mastodon problem: creating a normie account. Making a furry account was so easy! Vulpine.club seemed like a nice place, so I made an account. Done.
But I just want this account to be for fandom stuff. I don’t want a ton of news in here, and I’m not using it for work either. I’m a photographer, so I went looking for an arts-based server. I found mastodon.art and it seems like they’ve got a good community developing there, so I set up an account and started the process of re-following the people I followed on Twitter. But I can’t find everybody, because it turns out they’ve #defederated from kolektiva.social, where a few people I followed on twitter have chosen to hang their hat.
So now I need to find a new server that’s federated with both of those two, and is somehow still also relevant, and isn’t blocking some other instance that might have people I want to follow. It’s frustrating, but the benefit is that I now understand the complaints of everyone who finds mastodon difficult to navigate. Following the furries was easy. Navigating the wider #fediverse, much less so.

Can anyone point me to a post on here over the last week or so about an incident where an #LgbtFriendly #MastodonInstance was getting targeted late at night with #FalseAbuse reports that led to it getting #Defederated? Trying to link to/quote it, and the lack of search is thwarting me. I need to learn to favorite or boost anything I want to find again.
