Even better would be to make including alt text the default rather than an opt-in option requiring a click.
Having alt text as the default option — add an image and the alt text entry box is open with the cursor in it — finesse 3 problems:
1. Not knowing about alt text
2. Not knowing how to add it
3. Not remembering to add itI really wish adding alt text would be made the (software) default.

@motoridersd That is good. I do wish, though, that adding alt-text would be the *default* rather than an option requiring that the user:
1. Know about alt-text
2. Know how to add it
3. Remember to add itMaking alt-text opt-out instead of opt-in would solve all three problems.

I think the design should eliminate 3 barriers: When the person adding the image:
1. does not know about alt text at all (add link to informative guide);
2. does not know where to enter alt text
3. forgets to enter it.Automatically opening the alt text entry box with the cursor in it overcomes 2 & 3, and for 1, have this instruction: "Enter alt text if needed — see https://axesslab.com/alt-texts/"
This would be a big help.

It occurs to me also that drupal not only provides alt text as a default but it allows a *clear* signal of "I hate blind people." In Mastodon the signal is obscured because the absence of alt text may (and apparently often does) mean not that the writer hates the blind, but that the writer either doesn't know about alt text or doesn't know how to enter.
Drupal provides clarity, Maston provides ambiguity. Clarity seems better.

I don't know enough to follow, but it does sound as though it would elminate the problem of people simply not knowing about it, including many who are happy to provide alt text once they know how to do it and what it's for.
