  1. #FoliageFriday

Although I've always loved the beautiful foliage of #JapaneseBarberry shrubs, we've avoided adding any to our own gardens. They're highly invasive if not heavily controlled. Japanese barberry provides prime environments for #ticks to breed due to the high humidity in barberry's dense foliage. It's believed that spread of barberry is correlated with the spread of #LymeDisease.

I really wish stores/nurseries that sell plants would inform customers on problematic ones so folks can make more informed decisions. Many uninformed customers often buy Japanese barberry shrubs because they're deer resistant & visually appealing. I suggest avoiding it. It's been banned for sale in some USA states.
Just admire the shrubs in public cultivated gardens - don't grow them.

  2. You don't have to deer fence your entire property or orchard to grow fruit and nut trees.

After tempting the deer to eat leaves from hundreds of trees, from dozens of species, I learned so much about what I can get away with and what I can't.

  3. Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' is an evergreen clematis vine with vanilla-scented blooms in early spring. The vine attracts bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Climbs 20-25 feet. And because it has poisonous characteristics, the deer will leave it alone!
