  1. IC2574: Coddington's (not-)Nebula

It's like galaxy season all in one

Discovered by Edwin Coddington in 1898, IC2574 not a nebula but a dwarf spiral galaxy, an outlying member of the M81 group nearly 4Mpc away in Ursa Major - and, unexpectedly, about 90% of its mass is in the form of dark matter.

Prints, cards and more are available via the website: shiny.photo/photo/IC2574--Codd

  2. Sh2-142: The Wizard

Discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787, Sh2-142 is an open star cluster ~20ly across located ~8.5kly distant. A beautiful emission nebula and star-forming region.

  3. "An Oasis"

Properly known as vdB 48, I don't know if it has any pseudonyms but I loved the mixture of reflective, dust and Ha. vdB is one of my top-3 favourite catalogues.

Some day I'll try this again with a more intentional composition and maybe not forget to cover the light-leaks whilst shooting. Meanwhile, here goes something...

  5. Lobster Claw and Bubble Nebulae

Lots happening here - 3 obvious bright emission nebulae and my first Herbig-Harbo object (HH-170), a tiny grey fuzzy reflection nebula surrounding a newborn star just above the centre of the frame.

About 20hr data on these well-known objects in Cassiopeia and Cepheus. Nebulae processed in the HaHOO palette; stars overlayed in real colour.
