But now a reputable particle physicist--who has already proved the technique works--intends to use a 1MW or larger gyrotron to _'beam drill'_ down to 20km. A company called Quaise Energy has formed to commercialise the technology:

* safe
* continuous
and
* truly _global_, lying beneath the poorest village as well as the richest city.
In Earth's lower crust it's uniformly about 500C. The heat comes from the radioactive decay of uranium even deeper down which has been going on continuously since the Earth was formed and which will continue for billions of years into the future.
