Why does solid ice float on liquid water?
For almost every other substance on Earth, the solid state is denser than the liquid state because the molecules pack tightly together as they cool. Water completely defies this rule due to its unique chemical structure.
Water molecules are made of hydrogen and oxygen. When water is in its liquid form, these molecules are constantly moving, crashing, and breaking bonds, allowing them to stay tightly packed together.
However, as water freezes and drops below 4 degrees Celsius, the molecules slow down and form stable hydrogen bonds. This forces the molecules into a rigid, crystalline, hexagonal lattice structure. This specific geometry leaves a large amount of empty space between the molecules compared to liquid water. Because the same amount of mass now takes up more volume, ice becomes roughly 9 percent less dense than the liquid beneath it, causing it to float perfectly.
