We looked at relevant histories of trafficking and migration, and at early 20th century decriminalisation campaigns. Dr Julia Laite shared her research on the effects of criminalisation on the sex industry and the experiences of women who sold sex, while emphasising how these laws intersect with gender, class, and race.

• How did brothels turn from houses collectively-rented by prostitutes to mostly-male-landlords-owned rooms charged at ridiculous prices?
• What has been the historical result of tacking repression of comercial sex into laws intended to address trafficking or exploitation?
• What was abolitionism when applied to sex work at the time, and how does it relate (or not) to current neoabolitionism (“Nordic Model”)?
• How did police's treatment of prostitutes shift through that time?
• How did migration mix in with all of that?
