Listening to #DecoderRing from late last year about the word "like", and I loved the idea that it is used like a spoken punctuation mark, almost literally like a colon or semicolon. Because punctuation marks developed to imitate speech, but then diversified to provide additional information that was missing in speech, and so speech developed a tool that would put those functions back into speech.
