  1. How on earth can anyone call lemmy.world, wizard.casa, and gotosocial.social anything but absolute rubbish? They’re a total disgrace, a complete waste of time and effort. It’s astonishing how these so-called platforms can still be allowed to exist when they’re nothing but worthless, ruined excuses for social spaces! Absolutely infuriating!

  7. Another noteworthy quote from that article worth while remembering:

"The difference from corporate social media comes down to incentive structures. Platforms designed around narcissism and parasocial relationships produce content optimized for engagement. A federated network with no central owner produces something closer to actual knowledge-sharing, because nobody profits from making it addictive" 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

  12. “Not because the technology was superior, but because the people on it had no reason to perform.

Without engagement metrics or brand-building incentives, Fediverse users shared expertise instead of content”

Aaah, I still remember rather fondly when, 4 or 5 years ago, people on #MediaTools stated rather adamantly the #Fediverse was doomed because you couldn't rely on #Decentralised social networking tools.

And yet, here we are ...

  27. #Decentralised servers are not a new thing, but they are a new thing in the current context of highly centralised cloud systems. Anyone under 25 has probably never known much other than a very centralised and largely mobile phone based online experience.

The past of decentralised servers was not exactly designed. A lot of the decentralisation was due to the limitations of hardware and infrastructure which existed at the time. It wasn't that people were consciously choosing to be decentralised necessarily. In the early history of the internet, bandwidth was extremely limited and computers were expensive and a lot less powerful with a lot smaller storage capacity. The early centralised attempts failed because they couldn't scale up at the rate that the internet was expanding, given the hardware costs and bandwidth limits.
