Yes, there was a while around 2000–2010 when the 🪗 was on its last big “uprising”

When our show started (2006) and I began writing my #AccordionRevolution book that ended up taking until 2019 😅

The #Decemberists hit #1 in 2010🏆 Then what happened? Not sure.

We’re maybe due for a renewal in time for the 2029 bicentennial of the 1829 patenting of the first instrument called #accordion

  2. You know you’re getting old when your favorite bands start performing with the symphony. That said, this was a fantastic show.

My only regret about the picture is that Jenny Conlee got cut out and her enthusiasm was one of the best parts of the show.

  3. I may have some other loose ends to chase down. Colin has done some solo stuff maybe, and the 10th anniversary version of Crane Wife may have more deep cuts.

    More digging to do!

  4. Not to tease like that. Here's the actual playlist.

I listened to EVERY Decemberists track on Spotify under the band's name to create this list. Including songs only on compilations, live versions, and gosh I didn't realize how much I'd missed because they released it on "EP" instead of a regular album like normal people do. The best of allll that is on here.

This is not a terribly exclusive playlist. I wasn't picky and all their music is great. But I did leave off some stuff that was annoying, or just not quite spectacular or notable.

And no Mariner's song! I managed to get sick of that one and it's going to take a few more years to wear off.

I still have yet to choose tracks from As It Ever Was.

    But other than that!

So if you've ever wanted to check out The Decemberists, give this a shuffle.

  5. I've been recreating my long lost Essential Decemberists playlist, this time going into their deep tracks.

This is their saddest song. And you've probably never heard it before.

  6. If you've not gotten a chance to listen to this recent release by The Decemberists, Joan in the Garden is an epic prog-rock journey, an anthem, a concept album in one track, a rock opera all unto itself.

Set aside 20 minutes. I'm not even high right now, and this song got me there.

  7. Most impressive sight at the #decemberists show this weekend just outside #portland , Oregon, after the half full bike rack, berry pickers, and trans/queer/AuDHD rep? This line *for the #bus * #masstransit #transit #fuckcars

  8. @schizanon
Jenny Conlee’s #accordion fits under several if those categories 🪗✔️

  9. A delightful Decemberists lyric we've been enjoying lately:

"They condescend to fix on me a frown"

How can I learn to speak like that? It'd be proper mega.

  11. Cos this is the part where the ghost children rise up to haunt their murderous father.

  12. Crap now I’m in stuck mode till Hazards of Love finishes playing and I should have gone to bed 40 minutes ago. 😭🤩👻

    #Decemberists #music

  13. Yeah this is a very Hazards of Love epic vibe. Ohh, what if their next album is a concept album too and this is a piece of it?

Anyway, going to go listen to Hazards of Love again. Jesus, from 2009??

  14. Yeah the B side is great, too. I’m glad they’re good again. I wasn’t super into their last two albums. Maybe this single forebodes a new one.

  15. Ok yeah this new Decemberists track is a religious experience. One of those, “I remember the first time I heard…” songs. You’ll need 20 minutes.

Typical folksy opening, slow and pretty. Then the build, as I expected. And suddenly…

Terribly beautiful. It makes you feel things. Elevating. You’ll want volume up at the crescendo to transcend with the wall of sound. It just goes on and on. Bells!! I almost fucking cried.

And then what’s this?…a glitchy dark ambient waystation on the journey? That’s a new look for them. Very experimental but mostly not unpleasant.

And back to the prog rock, was expecting that. This part could be a rock classic from the 70s or whenever with lasers and everything. And a choir. Very exciting.

I have no idea what this song is about. Somebody dies. She had a dowry. I’m getting psychopomp vibes. Maybe we’ve just gone to heaven and then dragged through hell? Very tragic I’m sure.

Wow. It was worth the wait.

  16. What is your favorite #decemberists song, and why is it "Dear Avery?"

  17. I love the #Synthesizer work on The #decemberists' *I'll Be Your Girl*.

Great way to start the day; that wide, beautiful, analog sound kicking in at the start of the record as Colin sings "... all my life..." is like a dive in a warm, welcoming lake.
(Great contrast to the lyrics, but that's another story)

  18. Anyone who sees this should know that amazing artist Colin Meloy from #Decemberists wrote a sweetly radical & creative chapter books series, and check them out! If you're a #Pratchett or #LemonySnicket fan the Wildwood series will be right up your street. 👍🏻 Read them w your kids & No One Will Be Bored

  19. I cried when I read these lyrics aloud to my son on the day I made the solarpunk mixtape. Voice kept catching.

“Yes, we’ll go dancing…till it all starts over again.”

This one runs deep for what we’re all going through. What we will go through.

That was the accordion’s first “big” revival in the 1980s

The Americana revival went from Nirvana on MTV with Krist Novoselić playing 🪗 in ‘94, and peaked with the Decemberists at #1 for a nanosecond in 2011

I personally think we’re due for a Tricentennial Polka revival in the 2030s led by a crossover norteño hit

We will document this as the #Accordion media at @accordionnoir radio out of Vancouver

Somebody did a breakdown of how women died in #Decemberists songs like this

That was eye opening for their granola audience
