"I owe my soul to the company store" = #debtbondage / #Scrip system paid with non-transferable credit vouchers for goods sold at the company store; workers had no cash savings. Struggling in company-owned dormitories & houses, rent was automatically deducted from pay. Debt bondage persisted until the #strikes of the newly formed United Mine Workers and affiliated #unions forced an end to such practices.
