  1. The Arthur Miller Transistor Radio

Arthur Miller's great demand was that attention be paid. His son Danny waited ten minutes away for nearly forty years for the same grace. In the winter of 1990 I was Arthur Kopit's assistant through my Columbia MFA internship. I had helped him on his Phantom musical with Maury Yeston, and now the work was a staged reading of his new play at Circle Repertory in the Village, a theater with the size and polish of a garage. The play was called Bone-the-Fish, a savage comedy about Hollywood deal-making, and Kopit told me how he had named it. The title was his answer to David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow. Mamet's title meant nothing, he argued, and it had found success anyway, so he imitated the trick and answered with nonsense of his own, aimed at the same target. Better heads prevailed later; when Circle Rep gave the play its full production, it went up as Road to Nirvana. Sigourney Weaver was in the reading. The actors sat on folding chairs with scripts in their laps. There were no sets, no lights to speak of, no money. My job that night was to watch the door for Arthur Miller. When he came in, I walked him quietly to the last row, and we sat together. He did not know I was an intern, did not know my name, knew nothing about me, and asked nothing. At some point he leaned over and whispered, with open disgust, "Oh, hell! This is only a staged reading?" I did not reply. The man next to me had written Death of a Salesman, and I was the intern who had seated him, proud to share his folding chairs. […]

  5. Wow - *CATS Jellical Ball* announces closing date, despite good #ticket sales, #reviews! At 82.4% capacity, it took in more than the week before bc higher ticket prices, but at $767K/ week, it's underwater.
    > #DeathOfASalesman strides long, at the HUGE #Wintergarden, w/ 1 less show per week, it STILL broke $2M! Only #Hamilton made more (bc of extra performance).
    > #Schmigadoon's doing great at 97% at the #Nederlander (S of 42nd!) but w/ large cast, probably underwater.

  13. LINDA: Forgive me, dear. I can’t cry. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t cry. I don’t understand it. Why did you ever do that? Help me, Willy, I can’t cry. It seems to me that you’re just on another trip. I keep expecting you. Willy, dear, I can’t cry. Why did you do it? I search and search and I search, and I can’t understand it, Willy. I made the last payment on the house today. Today, dear. ..

  15. “WILLY, moving to the right: Funny, y’know? After all the highways, and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive.

CHARLEY: Willy, nobody’s worth nothin’ dead. After a slight pause: Did you hear what I said?

    Willy stands still, dreaming.

    CHARLEY: Willy!”

  17. “I don’t say he’s a great man. Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He’s not the finest character that ever lived. But he’s a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid. He’s not to be allowed to fall into his grave like an old dog. Attention, attention must be finally paid to such a person. You called him crazy—”

  18. “WILLY: Figure it out. Work a lifetime to pay off a house. You finally own it, and there’s nobody to live in it.

LINDA: Well, dear, life is a casting off. It’s always that way.”
