  6. Tiny meta goals.

I managed to kill Alice + Fred in perfect unison, so neither of them could complain. It's terrible, but it feels good.

(Normally, you get a speech bubble from either of them, saying that you killed their spouse)

  8. I played so much #DeathByScrolling that my Xbox controller gave up. The left stick now has a permanent upward drift, which, ironically, fits the game perfectly.

After a bit of research, I picked up the #8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless. Their model names are confusingly similar, and some shops mix them up. The gamepad is excellent, easily the best I have used so far. It is light, and it uses Hall effect sticks and triggers, which should dramatically improve reliability.

  10. Death By Scrolling hit me with a sense of political reality: Today I drowned trying to reach a supposed land of endless riches. I had completely forgotten about the challenge.

  12. New personal best: Level 32 with Bucket, 535k gold on Eternal Punishment difficulty.

I tried a new strategy using the +10% level-length destiny card, which explains the much longer playtime. It spawns more mobs (more melee-gold!) and slightly delays the difficulty spike, because enemy strength scales with levels and longer levels push tougher enemies further back. My biggest threat at level 25+ are enemies that can kill me with one hit because hearts/health is capped to 11.

  14. I had a magical run today but got one-shot by too much chocolate. New personal best: Level 28 with Bucket, 435k gold on Eternal Punishment difficulty.

  16. New personal best: Level 27 with Bucket, 307k gold on Eternal Punishment difficulty. Almost enough gold to buy a Yacht. 🛥️

This put me in sixth place on the leaderboard. Very happy about that.

  20. I have no idea from whom or how I got this award for my review of #DeathByScrolling but I’ll take it!

  21. Outplayed death, got played by greed.

The reaper actually played his kill animation, but missed me!

While fleeing, I ran straight into a Capitalist. He was eventually killed by the Reaper, but he still managed to steal 1350 from my pocket. And of course, those 1350 were missing to beat my previous gold record! 😭

Level 28 with Pastor Paul, 115k gold on Eternal Punishment difficulty.

  23. Good news everybody! The SteamDeck/Linux stutter is now fixed in Death by Scrolling, plus some other awesome quality of life changes. We continue to make improvements mostly because I can't stop working on the game.

  25. Normally, games with frantic pacing and aggressive music are a total no-go for me: too much of an instant stress response.

But Death by Scrolling somehow feels different: terribletoybox.com/deathbyscro

The levels are procedurally generated, yet the different biomes keep things fresh.

My inner collector is constantly being teased on multiple fronts, but I think the real magic lies in the very fine balancing.

You grow stronger, the enemies grow stronger, and you’re always hovering right on the edge of being slightly overwhelmed. Keeping the player as long as possible in that state is a form of art.

You can’t just over-skill yourself into invincibility, because that would mean relying on weapons you might not even find. The randomness keeps things spicy, though (admittedly) sometimes unfairly so.

The graphics are 16-bit nostalgia, and they fit the vibe perfectly. It’s a great pick-up-and-play title, but beware: you can’t save mid-run.

    Solid 9/10 from me.

  29. It started with scrollable tiling (first PaperWM, then Niri), now it continues with my daily runs of Death by Scrolling. If it continues like this I will end up creating a Loops account for myself😏.

  30. @grumpygamer I still love all the great adventure games. But I also love #deathbyscrolling so much. Killing time has never been more thrilling and fun!

  31. I was put off by the negative reviews on Steam when the Death By Scrolling launched, but when I saw that many of them came from players looking for a new Vampire Survivors-like game (there's even a very long comment comparing the two games point by point), and that they were increasingly drowned out by the mass of positive reviews, I decided to give it a try anyway because Ron Gilbert. And I'm glad I did.
