I’m no longer focusing on #powerlifting, and I know that I shouldn’t be comparing myself to others, that different goals require different loads, and blah blah blah.
But today there was a guy next to me front-squatting my #deadlift, and man did I feel personally attacked 😂 -

Greatest benefits of Smith Machine Deadlifts 🏋️
Smith Machine deadlifts get a bad rap sometimes, but when you understand what they’re good at, they become a really smart tool in a hypertrophy-focused program.
👉 Increased Stability = More Targeted Muscle Tension
👉 Better Control of Tempo & Time Under Tension
👉 Safer Option for Training Close to Failure

🗣️ Talking about 🦵 Dumbbell Single Leg Deadlift
✅ The single-leg dumbbell deadlift is a great exercise for building strength, stability, and balance. It primarily targets your hamstrings, glutes, and core while engaging stabilizer muscles throughout the body.

I woke up several times in the night. The anxiety from work is getting to me I think. I even dreamed of bombs going off and all that entails. I'm going to still drag myself to the gym but I think a nap is in order after.
Man deadlifts are going to be rough today.

Last week of the 5/3/1 training block video here! https://spectra.video/w/3Lcqb4spr1n7a8bJdzG1u3. (I also put it on YouTube if you prefer watching it over there).
This week I figured out how to record GoPro footage at a better resolution so it can actually be used in these! I also threw in some extra footage of random dog walks and driving around. Might be worth scrubbing through the video to see those bits if nothing else!
I also realized there was a much better encoding option which makes the videos render faster and be a way lower file size. So that's great!
I dropped the ball on closed captions. I'm sorry about that and it's still on my list to get going next time!

CW: Super long post, strength comp & gender, YouTube links
The Arnold Classic for #strongman and #strongwoman is coming up in a few weeks. It's one of my favorite competitions to watch in the year for a whole host of reasons, like the event selection, ease of access to watch, and general competitiveness. What really sent it over the top for me last year though was having close to equal air time and similar broadcast time to the men's events. So good!
Aside from fairness and all that good stuff, the women's contest was, IMO, even more interesting than the men's side of things. I've been thinking about why that is, and I think the answer's actually fairly straightforward - if you finally make access to something more appealing and fair, you'll get people to come out and start pushing it into interesting heights.
In 2022, there was no men's/women's even split. However, the third day was "Rogue Record Breakers" broadcast in a similar way. During that, the women's elephant bar #deadlift record was broken by Tamara Wolcott at 641lbs (291kg). Immensely impressive, and not something that could be matched by another strongwoman at that time, Andrea Thompson. None of the others were even close from what I recall.
Fast forward to 2023, where both men and women did the same competition, one of the events was once again the elephant bar deadlift. This time Tamara Walcott beat her previous year's record at 651lbs (295kg). Again, amazing! But:
1. She only tied with Victoria Long, pulling the same weight,
2. Andrea Thompson was only 4.5lbs (2kg) behind her.
3. Half of the competitors also pulled weight of at least 600lbs (273kg) or more, and the other half was nearly there.
If you looked at the men's side over that time period (I don't feel motivated to find the sources right now), I'm almost certain the improvement in the field was not nearly as great.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're even vaguely interested in strength sports, you should check it out this year. More importantly though, opening up strength sports and making the field more open and interesting for all kinds of people will just genuinely make the possibilities more interesting. If you skip being a gatekeeping loser, you get to experience such great things!

If you want a fun #deadlift variation that gives your lower back a break while allowing you to work hard on the top part of the pull, look no further than chained block pulls!
I worked up to heavy singles at 412.5 lbs (187 kg) with 55 lbs (25 kg) of chains.

Welp, technically supposed to be in a deload week. I am missing one session though. So gotta decide if I'm gonna squeeze that last session in. I also have the chance to go check out a #gym nearby if I want. So I may still go screw around anyway. Not really sure yet though.
I also may just end up doing a couple of 1rm max tests. A #deadlift or #pushpress might be in order! -

Tonight's workout:
Deadlifts: warm ups, 1x6 @ 265lbs (80% 1rm), 4x6 @ 255lbs (a bit over 75% 1rm).
Overhead press: warm ups, 4x5 @ 145lbs (a bit under 75% 1rm).
Bicep curls/skull crushers: 3x15 @ some very light weight. This workout was not supposed to feel so difficult. The deadlifts weren't too bad, but the presses were rough. Just took forever to get any energy going. Guessing either still leftover illness or a new illness starting. Argh!

Yesterday after a long #weightlifting hiatus I realized I can easily #deadlift 85lb for reps. I'm legitimately thrilled! At this time last year I had never even attempted any of the big three lifts. Despite a lot of setbacks and inconsistency, I've made so much progress. Really proud of how strong I've become!
-
Pushed through some frustrating challenges including (hopefully) the last dregs of a migraine and got in some #weightlifting today! Tried cable pullover for the first time, was thoroughly humbled and loved it. Worked on my #deadlift form too, which needs a lot of love. #benchpress is next on my list to improve.
-
@sancas Great question; I'm curious as well. So far I've just been following hashtags (#running, #deadlift)... Haven't been able to make #ExercisePhysiology a thing yet, though.
