    ## DDFON / Mycelial Web

    Sometime in the early 2010s, I've been using DDFON = Decentralized, Distributed, Federated, Open Network.

    In 2022/2023, I reopted the chosen new name for the Fediverse "Mycelium" since in the end no one used it (even after multiple votes and discussions). I now use it this way:

    * DDFON friendly name is "Mycelial Web".
    * Each network is called "Mycelium network".

    Since a "mycelium" is a single network in real life and the plural of it (a collection of mycelium) is "mycelial".

    ## Open Social / Social Web / Open Social Web

    There is also "Social Web" and "Open Social Web", which are the same actually. However, in the mid to late 2000s, it was already defined as any network that uses any technology that promotes openness and interoperability. There was also a now defunct organization called "Open Social" and a W3C effort supporting such technologies that falls under "Open Social".

    Two examples of "Open Social Web" are Hi5 and Google Plus. Hi5 and Google Plus are not DDFON / Mycelial Web but are Social Web / Open Social / Open Social Web.

    ## Personally

    I make a distinction between the much larger "Social Web" / "Open Social" / "Open Social Web" versus the more focused DDFON or Mycelial Web .

    Underneath the DDFON / Mycelial Web label are the Mycelium networks like:

    1. Fediverse (ActivityPub)
    2. ATmosphere (ATproto)
    3. The Federation (diaspora*)
    4. Matrix (Matrix)
    5. Jabber (XMPP)
    6. NOSTRich (Nostr)
    7. and others

    🙂

  2. The #history of #TwitterX migrations:

    * #Twitter Migration 1.0: Japan (2017?). They moved to the Fediverse
    * 2.0: Western world & other English-speaking countries (2021). To the #Fediverse
    * 3.0: UK (2024). To the Fediverse via #Threads
    * 4.0: Brazil (2024). Mostly to #ATmosphere via #Bluesky
    * 5.0: Global (2024). Mostly to ATmosphere, some Fediverse

    Keep it going!

    #SocialWeb #OpenSocial #Web3 #DDFON #MycelialWeb

  3. It's The #ATmosphere network, #Bluesky is just one of many #Federated "servers" running on #ATproto protocol.

    It's part of the larger/umbrella term #SocialWeb (a.k.a. #OpenSocial ) where the objective (s. 2005) is to #BringDownTheWalls (and #BuildBridges ).

  4. Writing prompt: "16 years later, the #Fediverse is finally mainstream"

    Who will take the challenge to write an article about it? Publish it on whichever platform you want, with your own chosen license (preferably Creative Commons).

    #ActivityPub #SocialWeb #OpenSocial #MycelialWeb #SNS #SocialMedia #DDFON #Web3

  5. @BeAware At first, it's expected. However, we have to try. If it won't fly, then it means, at least as far as the “Decentralized, Distributed, Federated, Open, Network” ( #DDFON ) space is concerned, they don't care if the “migrants” redefine things.

    It happened before… #Web3 was, and still is, about the #OpenSocialWeb but it was hijacked by #cryptocurrency people. And to solidify their control over what “Web3” means, these same people campaigned that OpenSocialWeb is actually Web3.0 (with the point-0 included). And voila, we lost control over “Web3”.

    It's happening again, with the term “Fediverse” this time. Ironically, some who were being lumped under the “Fediverse” terminology are resisting (like #NOSTR and #ATproto, they prefer to use #NOSTRich and #ATmosphere respectively).

    But, again, like I said introducing a new term has its positives, like in the example I mentioned re: “Baybayin” vs “Surat”/“Suyat”. The latter became the commonly accepted umbrella term instead of the former.

    It's all about the community. Remember, just a few years ago, the discussion about replacing the term “fediverse” were so common. Yet, when people suggested replacements, no one supported any. It was all complaints, and those who took steps eventually gave up.

    Maybe I will give up one day. Or, maybe not.

    LOL. “DDFON”, I've been using that since, I think 2012/2013? And it was only a year or two ago that someone said they like it better than all the other “proposals”. :p

    The way I understood it, this only applies to the ActivityPub-powered network called the #Fediverse (mycelium network).

    I can get behind it as long as it stays #ActivityPub only.

    - #MycelialWeb for all #DDFON .

  7. Talk about #DDFON (Decentralized, Distributed, Federated, Open, Network) (friendly name: #MycelialWeb), the latest iteration of #Libravatar is now using a federated software.

    wiki.libravatar.org

    I think it has been that way after the service was transferred to a new team.

    Having said that… what if #ActivityPub or at least the various platforms connected to the #Fediverse mycelium network, use Libravatar?

    For this to work though, Libravatar would have to be updated with a new verification process to handle the non-email ActivityPub webfinger. (And I'm not sure if there are other stuff that has to be updated/added.)

    If my memory serves me right, #Friendica and #Hubzilla are already doing this, although as a plugin the admin can toggle (but based on the email address attached to the account).
