#TheOdyssey is excellent... with a big asterisk. Not an asterisk that derails the film -- not at all -- but one I had trouble ignoring while watching. And that's the casting of _extremely_ well-known actors... it was incredibly distracting.

Of course, they have real names, but in the moment my brain is going "...is that the fucking Punisher?" as Tom Holland sits down next to Jon Bernthal in a scene. They were just seen together in the Spider-Man trailer shown before the very movie I'm watching. Usually one or two well-known actors and you get over the novelty, but man there's a lot here.

Anyway, pushing that unfair bit of business aside, these really are terrific actors and don't deserve such reductivness. Especially considering how engrossing the film is. But it has to be noted.

Further note, this was my first time experiencing a #DBOX seat in the theater: a comfy chair with built in haptics and light hydraulics. It's essentially like sitting on a giant gamepad vibrator, except it can pitch you back and forth and side to side as well.

It's capable of quite a jostle, but you're not going to, say, get tossed out of the seat. As a demo for the technology, The Odyssey is probably a perfect choice: lots of combat, giants, and especially ocean scenes -- my favorite. When you're in a scene on the ocean, for example, the seat gently sways with the ocean. During combat the chair echos impacts from various directions. Stampedes of horses or angry crowds are met with satisfying thumpa-thumps from the chair.

The experience also included an extremely large, sharp screen; not as impressive a boost as IMAX, but a notable improvement over the usual theater experience.

Tickets were $20 versus the usual $10, and for what you get... I'd do it again. But only for a really special film.

And The Odyssey, thankfully, is great marketing for it, if you were ever interested in trying it out.

I wonder what the contemporary #movie theater's threat model is. Is it “I'll half-watch it on my phone" or “I like to experience movies in #UHD #HDR on my 85” #OLED screen and my 11.2.4 #Atmos sound rig”? I ask because the marketing team for “Project Hail Mary" (loved the book, can't wait to see the movie adaptation) seems to be banking on a "see it in theaters” campaign and is helpfully having its directors explain the half dozen+ theatrical standards we seem to have evolved into.

Sound phase technology. Gotta have that.

Seeing TheAmateur in DBOX was literally the worst way to spend $5 I've seen or done in years.

80% of the movie is nothing. It was 30 minutes before the chair even moved. It was a hilarious stupid decision.

But nothing too unexpected.
