  5. Given that I didn't use earlier IBM PCs for business, I never quite got into the "lost" tech of that area, dBase. I tinkered around a bit with Visual Fox Pro, but coming mainly from a programming/UI building perspective, checking to see what one could learn there (it was quite good, if I remember correctly).

But no real experience with the non-relational database queries and scripts of that time. Is it worth getting into, just to widen one's horizon? (Probably via DOSEMU and dbase III or IV)

  7. I am still actively using the original programme that I wrote in 1985 to manage my comic collection. It is written in dBASE III+ syntax and compiled with Clipper on a state-of-the art Commodore PC20 with Intel 8088 (4,77 MHz, 16-Bit-architecture) CPU, 256 kB RAM, and 10 MB hard drive (fancy stuff, back then). Today, over 40 years later, the user interface may look a tiny bit outdated, but everything still works like a charm.

  10. TIL about couchDB

I am going to play with this DB on one of my distributions. couchDB scales from massive all the way down to mobile

  15. 🪨 dBASE on the Kaypro II 🛠️

Armed with nothing more than a blinking cursor, I build an inventory system for my failing software retail shop (just play along with me here). I also explore #cpm add-on options for the #apple2 #c128 #colecoadam and others, and whoops! Did I accidentally become a #dbase programmer in the process?

20. @isotopp was it really that recent? Now trying to remember what I used before then. I know I used Oracle, SQL Server, and (yuck), but I'm sure I used some RDBMS too.

  22. 👴 Ah, the good old days of #dBASE in 1984—a time when software was as clunky as the #VHS tapes this "video" probably came on. 📼 But hey, at least #YouTube is throwing in a legal disclaimer that's longer than the actual content itself. 🎥🤦‍♂️

  24. Update:

Successful upgrade of dBase! PostgreSQL running smoothly mastodon.social now runs on the spanking new database servers!

Small processing delays occur due to backlog of requests accumulated during downtime.

    Patience is a virtue...

  26. mastodon.social has incurred problems & is experiencing major outage.

PostgreSQL new major version running on new server hardware went awry.

There is a config issue with the upgrade.

Please just be patient and dont ask when the instance will be up again. Let the computer & server technicians work in calm so they can fix or roll back; either will result in the instance coming up again

  28. In India, dBase, FoxPro, etc. were popular early choices on the PC that remained popular for far too long:

#clipper #msdos

  30. @dirkdierickx Sweet, sweet memories...
My first real interaction with a programmable environment was with #dBase II on the old #DEC #Rainbow100 running #CPM 86/80 that my father had salvaged, when I was 12.

I didn't make much use of the database part of it, but I could write some simple games and scientific computations, inspired from #basic listings found in magazines (mostly my father's collection of "Science et Vie").
