Well thanks, Sparkfun. Now I had to spend my morning updating Schemdraw to correct the DB9 vs DE9 name in its circuit element library, and add several other D-sub connectors. 😀

@wyatt Do I have this straight?
- DE-9 is the common connector for PC serial ports since the PC-AT, specified in TIA-574
- DB-9 is the connector on older RS-232 serial cards: a DB-25 subset with only the 9 pins commonly used by a serial port#serial #SerialPort #DSub #DSubminiature #LegacyPorts #DB9 #DE9 #DB25 #RS232

My #Amstrad #ppc640 has an old-style 25 pin #rs232 port. Unfortunately yesterday I couldn't source a #db9 to #db25 #serial adapter, so I had to...ehm...improvise 😅
It seems that only Rx, Tx and ground are needed for it to work!

At the end, all will fit in this enclosure (there was an adsl filter inside). I made some holes for the usb and the reset button. The front hole contained two rj11 sockets, I cut the central divisor and obtained a hole the perfect size for the #uart to #rs232 #db9 connector.
Most of my #retrocomputing gear has the old #db25 connector, so I'll need an adapter anyway...

I learnt something about serial connections the other day.
I want to make it so my TV automatically turns on and off with my HTPC. Since almost no desktop GPU supports HDMI-CEC I needed to look for another solution. Turns out the TV has a fully documented serial interface which allows me to control it, so I bought an FTDI usb to serial adapter.
Unfortunately, both the TV and the adapter have male connectors (pins) so I bought a gender changer as well.
Turns out, serial is kind of a mix between USB and Ethernet. Most of the time, it was used to connect a PC to a modem. But in my case the TV counts as a second PC. And if you want to connect a PC to another PC via serial, then you need a special crossed over "null modem" cable. So yeah, I ordered one now.
