@[email protected] This must be the writing by Jonathan Swift, "the Dean" that Jacques Barzun mentions in #TheRetortCircumstantial. Barzun says that "mob" remained in spite of Swift's attacke but it's use was changed and that other words like "rep, pozz, phiz, hipps, plenipo" died off. Maybe #PetPeevs (from a recent #DavidOwen article) for writing can steer "usage" in a decent way.

The Writings of Hooker, who was a Country Clergyman, and of Parsons the Jesuit, both in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth; are in a Style that.. would not offend any present Reader; much more clear and intelligible than thosebeing Men of the Court, and affecting the Phrases then in Fashion; they are often either not to be understood, or appear perfectly ridiculous.
