  1. "Homicide: Life on the Street," was a game-changing television show when it launched in 1993. It was completely different to the formulaic police procedurals of the time, shot on handheld cameras, with no clear good or bad guys and a gritty approach to storytelling and visual style. It was loved by critics and discerning fans, but suffered from low ratings and network interference, though it still ran for seven seasons. Due to conflicts over music rights and the cost of adapting it to HD/4K, it went into TV purgatory, but now all 122 episodes and the movie are back on Peacock. For @TheConversationUS, media studies expert Summit Osur talks about how the show set the template for Peak TV.

  4. After the leading daily newspaper here wrote about it, I tried out the new #Jesus series, The Chosen.

I was drawn into it by the mention of David Simon's #TheWire as a big influence (apart from The #Bible, I assume).

Yeah, ok, this religious propaganda piece is much more ambitious than you'd expect, kudos to that. But make no mistake, it's still religious propaganda.

Semi-disappointed. Now I wish that #DavidSimon & folks really made #tv series about Jesus with their uncompromising touch.

  5. #DavidSimon tweeted snarkily about #NYC when he got a $50 ticket for speeding in a school zone at 5:40am in July. #ChristopherRobbins at #HellGate wrote what is probably the perfect letter in response. Read to the last line. hellgatenyc.com/david-simon-go

  6. SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from Scene 5 to Scene 6 and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an AI and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition.

SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

    ..

SIMON: … you know, when I sold all the scripts I sold ... I didn't sell them so that they could be thrown into a computer with other people's and be used again by a corporation.

  7. Buenos días con una noticia un poco bastante flipante. HBO suspende el contrato que tenía con David Simon después de que éste haya pasado 25 años trabajando y escribiendo guiones para ellos de algunas de las mejores series de la historia. Entre ellas, The Wire o Treme. ¿Los motivos? Simon se ha unido a la huelga de guionistas en EEUU. #HBO #davidsimon #TheWire

  8. I just re-read an interview I did in 2007 about my experience as music supervisor on David Simon's HBO show "The Wire," thought I'd share it here. It was for a fan site curated by Jim King, who I no longer know how to link to. The interview is long, but still holds up and has a lot of detailed info about the music in The Wire and the process of music supervising in general.
