  1. Digital autonomy ?

"Australia’s digital policy shouldn’t be dictated by large platforms or external geopolitical actors."

"The “digital sovereignty” movement in the European Union (EU) can show us the way. European countries are gradually breaking up with American tech giants and pushing for local AI development, all in the name of achieving digital autonomy."

"The ultimate goal here is digital autonomy. It means reducing reliance on systems vulnerable to growing geopolitical and economic risks. If you make your own devices and host your data locally, you’re not at the mercy of multinational corporations whose interests may not align with your own."

"Decentralised social media ecosystems allow independently operated communities to communicate across shared protocols without being controlled by a single corporation. One such example is the Fediverse, which includes platforms like micro-blogging site Mastodon and video sharing site PeerTube." >>

But in Bellingen, NSW they are clinging to foreign owned platforms. Here communication communicates via facebook or its is not. (Could be a Niklas Luhmann quote)

  6. I’m excited to share my latest article on why Open Source data portability is more than a technical feature: It’s a freedom issue and a competitive advantage.

When organizations can move their data without friction, they gain more control, reduce lock-in, and create better long-term options for innovation and growth.

  16. New blog post.

Local-first iOS apps respecting privacy and not treating users and their data as a commodity are rare and few. I have been cataloging such apps, and here’s a list.

If you know of other similar mobile apps, please share them. Thanks!

  26. @jerod It's actually quite broad. Check out Article 6(9) of the #DMA which makes #DataPortability mandatory for gatekeepers like #Apple, #Google, #Meta or #Microsoft.

I'm not an #Instagram user but under this law, Insta must allow users to extract all their account data and provide an #API to third parties to do that for users.

  31. Hey @loops, thanks to the EU #DigitalMarketsAct #DMA, #Tiktok has created an #API for third party apps / competitors that is supposed to enable real-time #DataPortability for users who wish to switch.

Have you considered putting an Tiktok account import function on the #Loops roadmap?

  36. I was fortunate present my thoughts at #FOSDEM 2026. I think it went pretty well... though a little rushed.

It's at least a good survey of where I think we as a community need to head, and how my work on #Emissary meets each of these needs

    Key Points:
    * Bring creators to the Fediverse (#OnlinePayments)
    * Work together to operate like a single unit (#FEP3b86)
    * Killer Features they can't copy (#DataPortability)
    * Whatever YOU do, go make the Fediverse better
