    1) you are responsible for protecting it,

    2) you are responsible for determining if harm could be caused if this data leaked,

    3) and you are responsible for deleting it properly once you do not need to retain it anymore, especially if it could cause harm.

This is a moral obligation and, in many circumstances, can also be a legal one.

  26. I have deleted my own personal Facebook account over 6 years ago now (and never regretted it!) :facebook: :nes_fire:

    But, about 3 years ago,
I realized I had forgotten to delete one of my business' Facebook account.

When I tried to login again
to delete it, even with my correct credentials and access to my email, I had been locked out.

Long story short, after a completely maddening back and forth, it is now FINALLY fully deleted, thanks to the help from my local Data Protection Authority.

    All of that to say:

👉 If you are barely using your Facebook account (or any other Meta account), deleting it now is MUCH easier than letting it collect dust.

👉 If you have already been locked out (they love to do this to VPN users), you still likely have options by placing a complaint with your local Data Protection Authority.

👉 Deleting the accounts you no longer intend to use as soon as feasible is always a good practice for your data privacy and data security.

  28. People who use social media other than Mastodon :twitter: :facebook: :meta: :

If you are still using some [BigCorpSocial™️] social media account(s),
I highly recommend maintaining a good data privacy hygiene on there. Especially because of all the data collected from these platforms, most recently, infamously, for scanning all your posts to feed For-Profit-AI-Machine™️

One important step to improve your data hygiene is to delete the older posts that are no longer useful to you (you can do this automatically on Mastodon by the way) :nes_fire:

Many [BigCorpSocial™️] have rendered this task more difficult recently by removing features previously provided to third-party developers.

BUT there is a fantastic desktop app developed by @micahflee coming up for this with a workaround! :awesome:

    Semiphemeral! :birdsite:✨

Semiphemeral will make it possible for you to delete your older posts from your [BigCorpSocial™️] accounts, according to your preferences.

I don't often recommend tools like this,
but this one is a great one:

    Privacy by Design ✅
    From a trustworthy source ✅
Top practices for data minimization ✅
    Runs locally ✅

I highly recommend it to anyone with social media accounts outside of the Fediverse.

  34. Gentle Privacy and Security Reminder
    for Organizations 🔒🗑:

One of the easiest way for your organization to not have data stolen in a data breach, is simply to not have this data.

One of the easiest way to save your organization future headaches and costs is to simply delete thoroughly the data you do not need anymore as soon as you do not need it anymore.

Whenever possible, it's even better to not collect it at all in the first place.

You might need to retain some data of course, but when an incident occurs, you will greatly reduce the harm, damage, and cost if you keep only the minimum data required.

You cannot be held accountable for the data you simply do not have.

    Keep this in mind! ✔️✨

  36. Maybe I FINALLY reached the end of my #InPost saga...
I had long unused #account in their service. I needed it in the past when I sent few things but accounts are not necessary to receive deliveries. I found this account during unrelated account list cleaning. And thought maybe I should delete it if I don't need it any more.

Several weeks ago I was looking for account deletion options. They don't have something like this. I found support contact form. They didn't have deletion in topics lists, I used "other". They explained I have to send email to their support address. So I sent email.

They claimed I have to use email address I use as login. So... ok, but this IS my login email. I was slightly irritated but had some more important things to do. I forgot about this for several weeks.

Last night I was in mood for fighting after reading about corporate scandals here :blobCat_evil:
I found their refusal messages in my inbox, for some reason still not deleted. So I logged in their website, took screenshot with my address visible on top bar and wrote new email with this attachment, asking what the hell is wrong with my account if I can see it is correct email.

And today I received message to confirm account deletion :blobCat_smirk_paw:

  37. #Cybersecurity #Messaging #Encryption #DataProtection #Privacy #DataDeletion: "A feature of various end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging apps and other non E2EE social media messaging are disappearing messages, which automatically delete after a set period of time. This feature may be useful for general privacy within your extended network, high-risk users, and preemptively clearing side conversations easily within linear chats. However, different messaging apps handle deleted and disappearing messages a little differently, in particular when it comes to quoted messages, chat backups, and screenshot notifications. It’s important to note that this isn’t a vulnerability in the software, but it could cause someone to change their threat model—the way that they think about protecting their data and privacy. Below, we note the variance that exists between different apps."

  38. #DataDeletion #DataProtection #Archiving #DigitalPreservation: "I’m sure you’ve heard the old aphorism that everyone dies twice. Now, it seems, we die three times. First, when you stop breathing, second, when a corporation deletes your account, and, third, when someone says your name for the last time.

I’ll be realistic here. I don’t think we should expect every company to keep our content forever, but I also don’t think they should get to unilaterally shrink the internet because they’re tired of being responsible for its upkeep. The internet shouldn’t be a handful of company towns that can pull up their stakes and leave when the data mine is tapped.

Erasing old content is, also, a fundamental betrayal of what the internet was created for. It was meant to be an infinitely expanding space of unlimited discovery. One that exists beyond what was possible in the physical world. You could be whoever you want, talk to whoever you want, and interact non-linearly across time and space. And a lot of companies got very rich by offering us the opposite: walled gardens and passive algorithmic recommendations jammed into linear feeds, which they marketed as more secure, more convenient, and more entertaining."

  39. #DataProtection #DataDeletion #Archiving #DigitalPreservation: "The policy changes are a reminder of how fragile our digital lives are and just how little control we have over their preservation, says Tamara Kneese, author of the forthcoming book Death Glitch: How Techno-Solutionism Fails Us in This Life and Beyond. With cloud storage, we’ve developed an expectation, or fantasy, that data is infinite and that our digital spaces will last forever.

“If Google follows through with this policy, and if other companies follow, then there is a risk that we will collectively lose entire historical archives along with rich personal memories,” she says.

Though Google cited security concerns as the chief reason for its new policy, experts we spoke with speculated that cost burdens also contributed."

  42. As a data protection lawyer, I often seen companies push data retention or data deletion policies to the bottom of the list.

It's sometimes seen as less important, because customers don't typically see this.

However, a recent fine by the CNIL shows there are real risks in delaying and never quite getting round to it. 😬

In this instance, Discord (a popular chat platform for gamers 🎮) received a fine over 800,000 euros for:

❌ Not having a written data retention policy
❌ Not having specific retention periods or criteria for determining retention periods
❌ Failing to ensure data protection by default in the way the application sat in the background on Windows platforms
❌ Failure to ensure security by not setting strong enough password criteria
❌ Failure to carry out data protection impact assessments.

If you are a company dealing with customers in the EU or UK, there is no better time than now to be elevating data retention/deletion on your 'to do' list. ✔️
