  1. Out of sheer boredom this evening…I decided to OCR and spreadsheet my beverage container recycling from the last few days - which accounted for about 3yrs worth of beverage consumption.

Given a 20% estimate for out of home consumption and recycling - I’ve spent an estimated AUD 6000 on pre-packaged beverages across that time, and consumed an estimated 1,300 litres in the process.

  2. post christmas I want to make a google sheet to tally out how many stories I finished and shared in some manner, and how many words I've managed to write. #DataNerd

  3. Friends, don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made: always use replication slots for your #PostgreSQL standbys 🤦

  4. My 7-year old collected 32 conkers while we out for a walk this morning (still not quite sure they all fitted into his pockets).

Nerdy dad saw the opportunity to introduce him to basic descriptive statistics. He weighed each conker and I set him up with Numbers on his iPad so he could create his first ever spreadsheet.

He seemed quite comfortable learning about basic functions to work out things like sum, average, min and max.

  5. 🎞️ How many degrees to Kevin Bacon?

I processed nearly 4 million actor-to-movie pairings to build a complete collaboration graph. Then ran shortest-path logic to see how connected a few stars are.

    ✅ Jon Hamm? 2 degrees.
    ✅ Brie Larson? 2 degrees.
✅ Jodie Foster? You guessed it—2.

🍳 This is part of my "Degrees of Bacon" series—drop 4 is here!
Built using public data + a love for film.

  6. I have also been looking for a blogging platform to host some stories about my selfhosting adventures

I'm currently looking into Ghost CMS as I used it in the past, but I am open to new outlooks

    My requirements are:
    - Must be opensource
    - Loads of statistics (I'm a data nerd after-all)
    - Lightweight'ish
    - Simple design
    - No Wordpress

Bonus if I can sync posts with a git repo (one way or another)

  7. In the Amazon Prime day sale last year I splurged to get a #WalkingPad. I've been using it most days since I purchased it and have slowly been able to increase the amount of time I use it.

Over the last month I've ended up keeping my standing desk permanently in the up position as I stand all the time now, even when not walking.

I'm a spreadsheet-data-logging-obsessive kind of person so let's take a look at what I've been tracking...

  8. #TIL about the Internet History Initiative (@IHI). It's a website that focuses on historical relevant public data sets. As a #datanerd and #datahoarder of #internet data, I appreciate that something like this spun up.

However, I am shocked, I haven't heard from it so far. Although, it's online since January 2024 already! Will definitely start to keep an eye on it.

Edit: Forgot to link the website: internethistoryinitiative.org

  9. Just added my recent library haul to my spreadsheet and I've already borrowed €191,- worth of books, which means I've already read more than the fee of €66,- (Dutch libraries you pay for your subscription) in January alone. I've also read €132,- worth of books on my #koboplus and #storytel subscriptions, I need to read a bunch more to read the yearly fee worth but it's way more than the montly fee. #bibliotheek #libraries #books #data #datanerd

  10. @blaine @akurjata Here's a BC map with major provincial highways and using charging stations as of today.

There is some weirdness near the border of the Yukon and Alberta as I limited it to BC. But this weekend I'll try running it for the whole country. #ev #electricvehicles #datanerd #mapping

  12. I updated my electric vehicle charging maps with the latest data. Surprisingly, the number of fast charging stations in Canada and the USA has doubled in the past 18 months.

With the charging density that now exists across Canada and the USA, you can road trip almost anywhere without any range anxiety.

  13. In November 2022, I created a bunch of maps visualizing the EV fast-charging infrastructure in Canada and the USA. It’s time to revisit those maps and see what has changed in the past 18 months, as the number of charging stations has roughly doubled in both countries.

    Canada

    In Canada,

    • The number of stations has grown from 739 to 1662 (125% increase).
    • Quebec had good coverage before. Now it is plastered with fast chargers covering all the populous southern parts of the province.
    • The big gaps between Saskatoon and Winnipeg, and Saskatoon and Calgary have been filled in with new fast chargers in places like Kindersley and Yorkton.
    • There is still a big hole around Whitecourt, AB and the highway up to Fort McMurray (which I’m sure is mostly symbolic at this point).
    • The northern parts of Canada are still pretty hostile to EVs, but progress is steadily being made. Pretty soon you’ll be able to road trip from Vancouver to Whitehorse with comfortable fast charging along the way.

    United States

    In the United States,

    • The number of stations has grown from 4024 to 7675 (91% increase).
    • Almost every interstate highway has good fast-charging infrastructure.
    • The major gaps in Texas, Mississippi, and West Virginia that existed in 2022 have been filled in.
    • The remaining gaps are mostly in Montanna.

    Animated Gifs

The animated maps really show the progress since 2015. Range anxiety is quickly becoming a worry of the past.

For simplicity, the maps above look at chargers with the most popular SAE J1772 connectors. I also did some analysis of Tesla’s charging stations which you can find on GitHub, along with all the python code used to generate the maps.

  14. @jots @augieray I’ve had an Aranet4 for a bit over a year now. The battery life is great on it, it’s super portable (just toss in a pocket or purse), and as an added bonus: you can get the data into @homeassistant with an @esphome Bluetooth proxy (granted the history doesn’t come over when you take it with you, but the Aranet app handles that).

  15. Since I've been putting on so many miles, I've been able to do a little data collection as well. I note, approximately once every two miles someone ignores a traffic light, sign, or law and tries to run me over.

  16. Electric vehicle registrations in Canada by province and quarter.

    BC - the clear leader
Quebec - the only other province ahead of the national average
    Saskatchewan - the laggard
Alberta - doesn't report data for some reason

  17. Back to my course...
Actually, I'm a bit tired, but everything's gonna be alright. Maybe this gets me out of the dirt and cold into an office at best into a home-office. 🤞

Anyway, calculations in SQL is bit fun, I start to really like SQL, but I assume, if it gets more real, it gets harder and then... We'll see. But until then I enjoy it. 😬 ✌️

    Have a great day.

  18. We are just *one* publication away from the nice round total number of 10,700 specifications published by #W3C since we launched the Consortium in October 1994 \o/

Since then we've published 460 web standards.

(Note: one single standards amounts to several publications because of the various stages the work reaches as it progresses.)

  19. Using GeoPandas and some open data sources, I created maps of Canada's electric vehicle charging network.

I've got more visualizations, a link to an interactive map, technical details, and more background on my blog post.
